Watching the Government shutdown saga, I can't help but think (hope?) that we are watching the death throes of the Republican party as we know it.  Like a failing regime, they cannot yet face their fate and they cannot accomplishment any policy goals, but they still wield enough residual power to inflict widespread damage on the population, which they do mainly to reassure themselves that they are still a politically relevant force.  Eventually, there will be realignment into two politically viable coalitions, but until then I think we should expect a very bumpy ride.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  What do you think will become of the Tea Party? (0+ / 0-)

Clearly they're not going anywhere. I see them either succeeding in highjacking the entire Republican party or breaking loose and forming a third party.

Either way it's hard to see them being any part of a politically viable coalition.

I think the Tea Party folks have always been part of the Republican coalition, but I think their current ascendant status is a symptom of the Republican party decline, not the cause.  Likewise, I don't think they will go away, but, when the Republicans recast itself as a politically viable entity (or is replaced), as it must inevitably do under the pressures of our two party winner-take-all system, they'll likely be marginalized.  Purely my opinion, not much to do but watch with mixed horror and fascination.
