What if the plan was to ALWAYS go over the debt ceiling? To put the executive branch in a position where, one could argue, they violated Section 4 of the 14th amendment?

In my opinion that is exactly what the plan has been and the cat is out of the bag. Let's take a look at a few quotes from the weekend.

"Obama should be impeached if the Congress allows a default and he does nothing." Rep. Gohmert.
“Defaulting on our national debt is an impeachable offense, and any attempt by President Obama to unilaterally raise the debt limit without Congress is also an impeachable offense,”  Palin said.
Given the timing and resolve we have seen on the part of the House I'm willing to bet this has ALWAYS been the plan and unfortunately for America we're going to watch it play out.

Has the plan always been: "to impeach Obama"?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

because there's no prayer he'll be convicted in the Senate.

Impeachment is just one more monkey wrench to throw into governance, and it will energize their base for the upcoming midterm election.

Personally I think they'll impeach him if either there is default or if not and he takes any kind of executive-only action to prevent it, such as minting the platinum coin or declaring the debt ceiling unconstitutional and directing the bills to continue to be paid.

Yes, they can set up a situation where "Anything he does is wrong," but the American people will see that for the trap it is.  Meanwhile, you have two back to back Democratic Presidents impeached by the House, by Republicans, and it starts to look like having a Republican House and a Democratic President means an impeachment.  I suspect that either the impeachment loses all value, or Voters reject House Republicans for a generation, or both.

The President has the power to delay funding of (for instance) military contracts until after the debt ceiling is lifted

    says something  I agree with

“Defaulting on our national debt is an impeachable offense, and any attempt by President Obama to unilaterally raise the debt limit without Congress is also an impeachable offense,”
This is exactly the bind they figure will finally give them something to hang on Obama.
And it doesn't matter to them that it will die in the Senate. It will tie up business in DC for a year or more, hang Obama up for the rest of his term, fighting them off.

If I ran this circus, things would be DIFFERENT!

able offense...then...wouldn't we also be looking at the possibility of impeaching members of Congress for causing it to happen?

  •  I don't think so (0+ / 0-)

I don't think it was the plan all along, mainly because they wouldn't be flailing around in sheer confusion from day to day.

The "impeach Obama" plan may be utterly stupid, but it's also elegant and simple.  If it were the plan, then the Republicans would be united around a very simple message.

But they're not.  It's painfully obvious they have no plan, and no clue what they're doing.

Yes, they'll pointlessly try and impeach President Obama, and it will cost them dearly in the polls and in 2014...but it's only because they don't know any better.  They're just looking to get "something" out of this, and they don't even know what it is.

they have been trying to find a scandal to pin on the dark skinned fella in the white house and they just can't because as it turns out Obama isn't the monster they themselves believed him to be; which only infuriates them even more, driving them to commit to finding anything even remotely scandalous to pin on him. So yeah, they will definitely try to impeach him for something, or any sort of thing imaginable but they will lose that case miserably too, and by the time 2016 rolls around, the Tea Party will  just be a bad memory. Elizabeth Warren will make a great president, doncha think?

I'm so tired of everyone pretending that the debt ceiling and default by Congressional paralysis are constitutional. Come on, President Obama, just use the damn 14th Amendment already.

Government and laws are the agreement we all make to secure everyone's freedom.
