My youngest son found out he had Type 1 Diabetes the day before Halloween. He was 10.
He was okay with the disease for 3 years and then went wild. At one point in his teenage years he was drinking 20+ beers a day. He had blood sugar readings from 20 to 500,
I was told he would be dead be the age of thirty.
As an adult,he seemed to change. He quit drinking and doing drugs except"pot".He got a legal prescription due to a broken knee,
The last few years he has had 17 visits from the medics. 911 knows me on a first name basis, I was once asked to at least leave cookies and milk for them if they would be here once a week.
Diabetes and  marijuana do not mix. Low blood sugar"s turn my son into a monster. Last night I am having a conversation with him and seconds later he gives me a look right out of a horror show . I run to get supplies to fix him. I hear a scream, he has a knife and he is ready to stab his Mother.
I grab him from behind,he drops the knife and I drag him to his bedroom. He weighs 255 lbs.
I have everything I need to pull him out of his problem, (you should see the kit),
He is pounding his fists on my face and head,. I look up and see three of the biggest cops I have ever seen. I warn them to wait a second because I was getting pounded at the moment, One cop says "no problem I am the poundee!"
I leave the room and the medics and cops take care of him.
One policeman asks what I wanted to do with him. Take him to jail I said.
'Oh! I cant charge him," He was out of his mind."Its okay to try and kill but your in trouble only if you kill the person? I asked.
The only thing I can do is take your son to the hospital to have a mental check.
By now my son is fine and remembers nothing and asks why his Mom is crying."She gets that way when someone try"s to kill her."
The Hospital calls this morning to ask why my son is there. I explain the knife incident and the nurse said it was a result of a low blood sugar.
Your son is just fine sir, I explode on the phone and say other than trying to kill his Mother. I tell the nurse to send my son back to me and she could go play doctor.
I am not her favorite person. I tell my son if that ever happens again I will take the knife away from him and he better stay miles away from his Bi-Polar Dad.
I tell the story for one reason: our laws need changing.
I have mental issues of my own but that is no excuse to harm anyone. My son"s Mother is staying with friends, she is afraid of her own son.
I told a friend that I had to bethe worse Father in history. he said "well today a 27 year old man is being sent to prison for life for killing his grandparents. I knew those two who were killed,He said. They loved the man who strangled them."
My friend knew I was down. "Sometimes Mike,Evil happens"

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
