That is being voiced by thousands of children tonight across this nation.
The car is where they live.
Eat.
Sleep.
Play.
All of it in the car.
There is no where they can afford to get out of the car.
Not restaurants.
Not motels.
Not grandmas couch.
Just a car.
Usually with the engine running for the heat.
A tragedy waiting to happen if snow drifts up to the exhaust.
We have all seen them. Windows piled high with bedding. Sometimes at the edge of the parking lot so the parent can work there and at least bring in some gas money. Unlike other countries with such severe poverty we do not allow open lands to be camped upon. There is a two week limit on state and federal lands. So heading out like Thoreau is not an option here.
I do wonder what will these children raised on privation will turn out to be. Will their health suffer from lack of movement. Will they be mentally capable of trusting after watching nearly everyone they encounter frown and look away. Or perhaps offer a measly amount of money out of pity for the family trapped in poverty?
What are we doing to the future?
"Mommy I want to get out of the car"
