NRSC Chairman Sen. Jerry Moran (R. KS)

Received two e-mails from U.S. Senate candidate Rick Weiland's (D. SD) campaign today.  First off, though Weiland has been considered an underdog in his bid against former Governor Mike Rounds (R. SD) in the race for Senator Tim Johnson's (D. SD) seat, the NRSC isn't underestimating his chances:

"They're just scared the American people will figure out Medicare is the answer to this whole health care mess."  That's how South Dakota's Rick Weiland is explaining yesterday’s surprising attack against him launched in Washington DC by the Republican National Senatorial Committee.

Speaking in Brookings, where he was visiting his 186th town of his the ‘Take It Back’ campaign he launched just 4 months ago, Weiland jabbed the national Republicans for being "100% completely out of touch with what South Dakotans, including South Dakota Republicans, are thinking."

“In the 186 towns I have visited," Weiland said, "I've talked with hundreds of people who are angry about Obamacare.  I've also talked with thousands who do not want to scrap Obamacare just to go backwards to the overpriced ‘Greedycare’ system we had before Obamacare.  But I have yet to talk with a single person who is against giving what I am actually campaigning for a try.”

“Obamacare needs to give every American citizen the option to buy into Medicare.  That's what I am for and that is why the big money special interests who pay for the DC Republicans attacks are after me.  They are scared to death of having to compete with Medicare.”

"Think about it," Weiland challenged.  "All I am asking is that the American people, all of them, be given a choice between buying into Medicare at a fair price, or buying from the big private insurance companies.  They say they are for competition, so bring it on.  Medicare versus Greedycare.  Obamacare is in trouble because it did not offer that choice," Weiland said.

Weiland also offered to send copies of the press statement he released just yesterday to anyone who actually believes the NRSC claim he is a lifetime lover of Obamacare.  It is attached and was released 14 hours before the NRSC’s claim that, "if Weiland is elected, Obamacare will remain."

"I think the NRSC is hearing footsteps," Weiland joked with his Brookings listeners. "I didn't exist until the pollsters whose polling of the last Presidential race was the most accurate in the nation said I had come from 27 points down to within 6% of Mike Rounds.  Now they say I'm a threat to America when in fact the only thing I hope to threaten is the stranglehold they and their big money friends have on our healthcare system," Weiland concluded.

The second e-mail Weiland sent today acknowledges that he has the NRSC spending money to defend Mike Rounds and is using it to fundraise:
It looks like we struck a nerve. National Republicans are out with a new attack today trying to distort my record on health care. Help me fight back:

I’ve been pretty clear on how I think we can fix Obamacare and I’m happy to repeat myself because apparently the NRSC misheard me:  GIVE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE THE CHOICE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN BIG MONEY PROFITEERS AND MEDICARE.

Obamacare is having problems because it does not give every American a choice between Medicare and the private insurers. We need to offer every American the opportunity to buy into Medicare, and we need to offer them that opportunity right NOW.

Donate $9 now to help me take the fight to the NRSC:

It looks like Republicans are starting  to get nervous.  All the NRSC seems to say about South Dakota is their big money candidate Mike Rounds is sure to win in a landslide ... but if that’s the case why on earth are they even wasting their time misrepresenting my positions and beliefs?  Well, it might have something to do with a recent PPP survey which showed me down 6% to Mike Rounds with 15% of voters still undecided. Maybe Mike should spend less time raising out of state money and a little more time visiting with voters.

I am going to keep doing what I pledged to do when I got into this race: visit every single town in South Dakota. In fact, I am holding another townhall tonight in Aberdeen at NSU.

Washington needs real change … not another Senator who will kowtow to big money special interests.

Here's the info for Weiland's next Town Hall meeting at Northern State University:

He will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Centennial Room at the NSU Student Center. Free pizza will be served. The event is open to the public. - Aberdeen News, 10/29/13

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
