Today is the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht or "Night of Broken Glass."Throughout Germany in the early, pre-WWII, days of the Nazi era, on this night, Brownshirt thugs attacked Jews and vandalized their homes and shops. It was a harbinger of the coming Holocaust--perhaps the last warning in time to stop things. But most Christians, or even most non-Jewish Germans didn't notice.
In the U.S. today, racist violence is on the rise. Are we sufficiently alarmed? Is it a warning of creeping Fascism? Or worse? How can those of us who are white take notice and respond adequately?
Forgive the brief diary. Just thought that, in the wake of growing Stand Your Ground laws and the racist violence they protect, and of increasing police brutality, "stop and frisk," etc., we might want to heed a warning from the past.
