I often wake up with a familiar tune in my head, or the lyrics to a song I heard the previous day, something that lodged in my mind and kept percolating while I slept. I listen to lots of music, mess around on a mandolin from time to time, and it's fun for me to try to figure out why the morning's tune is there. I am not a composer or singer/songwriter, though, so the stuff is never original. Except once. Shortly after the disaster at Fukushima, after a day of watching storm clouds blow in all day from the west and wondering how much radiation was coming down with the rain on my garden (whose vegetables I never washed because they grow in virgin soil with no spray), I woke up the next morning with the first verse of a blues song in my head. It had a perky beat for some reason and has stayed with me ever since. So on the eve of the two-year-&-eight-month anniversary of the disaster, I thought I'd add a few lines and share it here. Feel free to add to it and if you have a melody suggestion, so much the better.
THE FUKUSHIMA FUBAR BLUES
I got the Fukushima FUBAR blues
Every time I think about the news
Or hear somebody speakin’
‘bout reactors that’re leakin’
Got the the Fukushima FUBAR blues
I’m already breakin’ out in hives
Every time I think about the lives
Of kids and pregnant women
Eatin’ Fukushima’d salmon
I’m already breakin’ out in hives
TEPCO’s feeding us a pack of lies
And it’s hoping lying to us buys
It time to reconnoiter
While we grow ourselves a goiter
TEPCO’s feeding us a pack of lies
The fuel rods in Unit Four
Should be causing a world-wide uproar
But the mainstream media’s silent—
does it fear we might get violent
If we find out just how Fuk’d we are?
I got the Fukushima FUBAR blues
And I’m sick of hearing pro-nuke views
Because there ain’t no way to undo
All the poisoning broke nukes spew
Got the Fukushima FUBAR blues
