Talk show host delivers DNA test results to white supremacist town founder: ‘You have a little black in you’
Will this information change this wing-nut hater's life? Probably not right away, but this info will be stuck in his head for the rest of his life :)

Craig Cobb submitted to a DNA test as part of an ongoing Race in America series on the syndicated “Trisha Show,” and host Trisha Goddard delivered some surprising test results to the 62-year-old hate crimes fugitive from Canada in an episode that will air Nov. 18.

As her studio audience laughed with delight, Goddard, who is black, told Cobb that test results revealed his genetic ancestry was 86 European and 14 percent sub-Saharan African.

Cobb took in the news with a fixed grin before looking around, as if for assistance, and insisted the results were nothing but “statistical noise.”

As the audience continued roaring its approval, Goddard said: “You have a little black in you.”

But Cobb disagreed.

“I’ll tell you this,” Cobb said. “Oil and water don’t mix.”

Maybe we should all have our DNA tested at birth, you know so we start out knowing No Body is Pure White or Pure Black or Pure anything any more, if they ever were. Seems it might stop some of the Hating at the get go.

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Per "One Drop Blood" Doctrine, He Is Black (10+ / 0-)
The one-drop rule is a historical colloquial term in the United States for the social classification as Negro of individuals with any African ancestry; meaning any person with "one drop of Negro blood" was considered black. The principle of "invisible blackness" was an example of hypodescent, the automatic assignment of children of a mixed union between different socioeconomic or ethnic groups to the group with the lower status.

Who is Black? One Nation's Definition by F. James Davis

    The One-Drop Rule Defined

To be considered black in the United States not even half of one's ancestry must be African black. But will one-fourth do, or one-eighth, or less? The nation's answer to the question 'Who is black?" has long been that a black is any person with any known African black ancestry. This definition reflects the long experience with slavery and later with Jim Crow segregation. In the South it became known as the "one-drop rule,'' meaning that a single drop of "black blood" makes a person a black. It is also known as the "one black ancestor rule," some courts have called it the "traceable amount rule," and anthropologists call it the "hypo-descent rule," meaning that racially mixed persons are assigned the status of the subordinate group. This definition emerged from the American South to become the nation's definition, generally accepted by whites and blacks. Blacks had no other choice. As we shall see, this American cultural definition of blacks is taken for granted as readily by judges, affirmative action officers, and black protesters as it is by Ku Klux Klansmen.

Rhetorical question here, but wouldn't that '14% African-American' result allow researchers/genealogists to determine how may generations back that DNA was introduced, and possibly even locate the ancestor(s) in genealogy records?   I'm assuming that the 'mixing' episode happened on these shores, which leads to the assumption of a female AA ancestor and of a generation that could 'pass'.

Here's hoping someone takes the initiative to trace this guy's family tree.  Maybe some of the 'other' relatives will decide to move to his town.  (Are you listening, Dr Skip Gates?)

town (that he's trying to establish) is growing on me.    Will he now have to tout it as the '86% white supremacist' town?

And -- what fun! -- will his followers scorn him?  Accuse him of being a lying, cheating [insert epithet of choice]?  If he has collected money from people for land purchases, will they sue him for fraud?  Fun times.

Cobb said he regrets that he was “guileless” enough to believe that the Ancestry by DNA test would be scientific, and says he'll have up to three other DNA tests for comparison. He said he’s already submitted two samples, but his saliva didn’t produce enough DNA.

Cobb said he’ll make the results public.

        [...]

Bobby Harper, a black man who lives in Leith [the town Cobb is trying to take over], said he thought Cobb’s DNA result was hilarious.

“I knew there was one other black person in town. Is he going to want to kick his own self out of town and discriminate against himself?” Harper said.

        [...]

Cobb said he’d understand if he’s rejected by other white separatists and neo-Nazis because humans should be able to exclude others by choice. He’d also be too black to belong to his own racialist Creativity religion.

        [...]

Asked about the implications for Leith, Cobb wondered if he’ll be target of “discrimination against octoroons in Leith.”

Octoroons are people with one black great-grandparent.

but not quite sure when and how this could be used in polite conversation. Except I might encourage Cobb to make appropriate changes on college admission forms and employment applications and wait to see if discrimination or reverse discrimination is affecting him.

And what's more confusing is what we'd call someone with that 3.2% Neanderthal blood mentioned by another commenter. Even if we had Neanderthals running around 1,000 years ago how would we still have this 3.2% lingering? Dodecaroons?

Interesting.  Now Mr. Cobb knows he is 86% European and 14% African.

I'm betting he still believes in his inherent superiority over people of color.

But I'm wondering what percentage of blackness is needed before Mr. Cobb thinks he should hate a person.  Will Mr. Cobb hate people who are 50% black?  25% black?  10% black?

Given that no one is 100% white or black, does that mean Mr. Cobb hates everybody?

Besides the video of Cobb receiving the news (and declining a fist bump from the host of the show, Trisha, a black woman, the article has photographs of Leith, ND and includes comments by the town's only inter-racial couple and the people who are coming to Cobb's home to help defend it.

Leith looks to be a small, impoverished place where some people don't have anything to do but hate.

where some people don't have anything to do but hate."

So does America, or wide swaths of it at least.  And as this story once again points out, it is all based on appearance as it works out societally.

Race has nothing whatsoever to do with biology, nature or genetics, never has.  It is a social and political construct, a fiction leveraged to divide the masses and render them feckless in taking on the power of the aristocracy.

Review the genesis of the Atlantic slave trade and how that arose in the colonies.  There was an inflection point with Bacon's Rebellion.  From that point on the aristocracy determined to have distinctly different types of bondage for whites versus blacks.

And the modern day Reich wing Republican vision is little changed.
