Great Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown has begun really campaigning on fundamental economic issues. He’s working to raise the minimum wage, to raise the minimum wage for restaurant and bar servers who get tips, and to expand Social Security.
It is up to all of us to do all we can to build overwhelming support for these initiatives.
These are three no-brainers. The tip minimum wage is essentially the same as it was 40 years ago when I waited tables. The regular minimum wage hasn’t been raised since 2009.
And way too many people including Democrats are talking about “reforming entitlements,” which translates in regular English to cutting Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
The best way to stop cuts to our most successful social programs is to go on the offense and do what needs to be done.
These issues are critical to our economy, our people, and our country.
The human misery created by the unregulated financial sector blow-up continues unabated for way too Americans. The only way to relieve that misery is to put more spending power in the hands and pockets of folks who will spend it. Nobody will spend the little bit of money they have more quickly than people working for the minimum wage, waiters, and our elders living on Social Security.
We cannot continue to leave some of the hardest working people in America barely surviving.
And these are great issues to begin work on in an election year.
