Perhaps someone will have more information on this. The FBI tried so hard to get this man arrested for terrorist activities. Mohamed Osman Mohamud was convicted almost a year ago for attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. That was actually a fake bomb the FBI provided.

2010 Portland Oregon Car Bomb Plot

Today the judge in the case canceled his sentencing that was suppose to happen on December 18th. The reason for this is because last week the prosecutors admitted they used evidence that was obtained from a foreign source outside the US under FISA, the Foreign Intelligence Act of 1978. They used information from warrantless surveillance.

Portland Oregon Terror Case Sentencing Canceled

My guess is a mistrial will be declared. Of course one doesn't know how the judge will end up ruling on this but it's evidence that was not disclosed during the hearing. So this one is not over yet.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

..the FBI could force its agenda to work "with" the Portland police department.  Portland had refused, until this fake Christmas tree bomb case, to allow the FBI to work with them. Once this sting took place, Portland allowed them to come in, giving the FBI access and power. It's outrageous the way this young man was led on by these people. It's immoral.

The purpose of this blatant entrapment operation was to stampede the city gov into signing on the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, which had been repeatedly rejected. They got it.

I hope this kid gets a reprieve, but I suspect that they will find a way to put him away into a dark hole somewhere and throw away the key.

This man dialed a cell phone to detonate a 55gallon drum car bomb which would have killed scores of the 1000s of people watching a X'mas tree lighting. This is a pretty evil man intent on killing people. There is no entrapment here.

Entrapment typically involves inducing somebody with something that personally benefits him. For example- if I offer you $1 million bucks to buy a gram of coke for me- you'd probably do it even if you'd never bought a gram of coke before in your life, because that $1million is too irresistable. But in this case, there was no personal benefit to the perp. He was just out to kill people.

You can criticize the FBI, without making excuses for this terrorist.

we don't know how far he would have gone without the FBI being there. Without the FBI there would have been no "bomb". They became very involved with this man who previously said he wanted to go to the Middle East.

They could have watched him without participating and arrested him if he had proceeded without their help. But the ability to do that is long gone on this case.

This is a common and long used FBI tactic, and there are many similar cases of Muslims (or Leftists, or Civil Rights people, or Environmentalists, etc) being manipulated by elaborate operations to get them from talking bullshit online to the point where they will "pull the trigger" with surveillance cameras rolling. This kid may have had radical sympathies, but he was radicalized by the FBI.

        •  He radicalized himself well before the FBI (0+ / 0-)

He was writing for 'Jihad Recollections' magazine. He radicalized himself well before the FBI set him up. He had been emailing people in Pakistan, and tried to fly to Pakistan and Yemen. So he was more or less headed down the jihad path, before the FBI got to him.

The FBI handlers even told him that there are a lot of children at the Xmas tree lighting, and he said 'Good- that's what I want'. He scouted the location by himself, bought a lot of the hardware for the bomb himself, bought hard hats and ferlective vests as disguises and recorded a jihad video statement even.

This is definitely not just a confused kid who was handed a cellphone.

and all of the other things set up by the FBI.

I consider it entrapment when the "suspect" was fully supported by the government in the run up to the "crime".

And calling it entrapment doesn't excuse the perpetrator. He can be a shitty human being and it can be entrapment.

Also, the link in this diary leads to a Wikipedia page; in the analysis section, it notes that there was a nearly identical situation with the FBI occurring at the same time in Baltimore.

        •  He actually purchased the phones himself (0+ / 0-)

along with various electronic hardware required to build the bomb. The target was selected by him. He scouted out the location himself. The FBI handlers even told him that there would be lots of children there, and he said 'Yeah, I mean that’s what I’m looking for.'   This is a cold-hearted killer. Certainly not a confused, young man handed a phone.

  •  The kid got framed (0+ / 0-)

even if he was a bad person.

The FBI messed  up his summer job and got him put on the no fly list.

Then he couldn't go work in Alaska for a few months, make some money, and maybe find a different path in life.

So He was stuck in Portland with no job and no money, and the FBI undercover agents were offering him money and support.
