Hello, and Happy Thanksgiving, or Stuff Yourself Silly Day, as crose called it, to all my fellow venthooligans! Hope you all enjoy it, where ever and however you choose to do so. My plans are to cook pretty traditional fare and enjoy it with my sister, Molly M -uid 16410, her husband, Bill and my DD, Megan. For the five of us I'm cooking a 20 pound Diestel Organic "Heirloom" Turkey, Sage Dressing I learned how to make from my Granny, as well as her green beans with bacon, and mashed potatoes and gravy. I skipped Granny's giblet gravy recipe, ugh, I hate giblets!!!! My sister makes apple crisp and Bill makes cranberry, orange and walnut sauce. Since the Civil War is Friday, all will return for leftovers Saturday along with my Son, Rian, Daughter in Law, Emily and Grandson, Darby My brother, Ned, may come as well. I noticed a variety of dinners mentioned last night, including:
crose, preparing Wild boar in brine, 2 loaves of cranberry orange bread, roasted cauliflower-leeks-Brussels sprouts, and butter-almond crusted apple pie. She originally expected 5, then added 2 more, got more boar, which the dogs get, since the 2 additional backed out.
Man Oh Man, making roast chicken, with spicy pickled garlic marinade, summer squash with gingered sweet and sour sauce, mashed potatoes with turnips, onions and carrots.
baked apples, cheapass box of cornmeal dressing, and Little Debby Coco Crèmes.
dsb is worried about the GF pie crust she made, but she'll be bringing the pies to her sister, who lives across the bay, who's cooking for her husband and daughter, dsb and her daughter, and her ma. And she thinks one of her brothers is driving in for the day.
Alexandra Lynch has been busy all week, doing the thanksgiving baking Tuesday, then
Wednesday she'll do the turkey and a lot of the side dishes. (her recipe is technically a braise in white wine with vegetables. Does not produce a brown bird, but they don't carve at table so it's irrelevant...it's TASTY.) Thursday will be the biscuits and the various things that have to be done up fresh, and that way also she can boil the carcass overnight for extra broth for more gravy.
Mofo described his ideal turkey day thusly: Give me a nice warm plate with a thick slice of white meat, some mashed taters and dressing on top and a coating of gravy over the whole thing and I'm a happy boy.No pumpkin or pecan pie though. Nuh uh. Apple, cherry or lemon meringue. And don't stand in front of the TV, there's a game on goddamnit!
You other venthooligans, who are keeping their plans on the down low, have a good Turkey Day. When, or if, you think about things you're thankful for, maybe this little nightly getaway will be one of them. It is for me.
Here are a few clips from the past couple of days
