GUS (Gave Up Smoking) is a community support diary for Kossacks in the midst of quitting smoking. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. If you are quitting or even just thinking of quitting, please join us! We kindly ask that politics be left outside.
You can also click the GUS tag to view all diary posts, or access the GUS Library at dKosopedia for a great list of stop-smoking links. Check it out! Want to make sure you never miss us? Follow (♥) the GUS tag to keep GUS in your Stream and easily find the link to the latest one. It's just that easy!
A message to ALL quitters (and would-be quitters): You don't have to avoid GUS if you have a failed quit. We won't give you a bad time or nag you. We consider the failed quits as "practice" for the real quit.
Have I mentioned how much I despise the whole idea of Black Friday?
Well, yes, actually---right here, a few years ago---and a quick skim of the piece lets me know I've already said most of what I wanted to say on the topic and have no hope of throwing together a more nuanced or informative critique of the whole Black Friday thing in the 30 minutes I have to spare for writing this morning, and I'm not even going to try. So there!
(I know, I know...you came here expecting the ever-charming flumptytail and instead get a cranky, half-assed Vacationland diary for your troubles. Sorry about that. Disappointed ticket-holders can get a refund at the box office; be advised, however, that the lines everywhere on Black Friday are too long and it's a little chilly outside today, so dress warmly for your estimated three-hour wait.)
Aaaaaaannnnyhoo, while I may be boycotting the frenzied consumerism that is the modern Black Friday ritual, that's not the focus of my day. I'm fortunate enough to have the day off, so I've got an extra weekend day to get stuff done (or not, as I see fit, because nobody's the boss of me today, hooray!). Thanks to Turkey Day leftovers I won't have to actually cook anything for about a week (microwaving doesn't really count); today, most of us are still in that fabulous post-holiday afterglow where you're not sick of turkey and stuffing yet. And of course grocery shopping happened before the holiday so I don't have to wedge that into the weekend either. w00t!
Since there will be no sale-hunting at stores for me this frosty Friday (or indeed, venturing out into the freezing cold at all today, save for a brisk walk around the neighborhood with my bundled-up dog), I have a bit of extra time to hang out here and create a little space for like-minded people to kick back and relax and share our weekend plans, post-holiday tales (or holiday horror stories, if that's how you roll), alternative ideas for coping with the holiday season-slash-retail-extravaganza (craft or DIY ideas? plans to hop off the gifting train and take a different approach this year? general curmudgeonly behavior?) or just to check in and touch base with the community in a non-toxic atmosphere.
So---with apologies to those who find Christmas music annoying and/or toxic---'m going to post a few of those as a sort of "step down therapy" for non-shoppers who are used to getting their first dose of cheesy Xmas cheer via mall music. All of the festive musical atmosphere but none of the lines, sore feet and backs, jockeying for parking spots, or lighter wallets.
p.s. a big thanks again to flumptytail, who covered for me when I couldn't get my act together on Wednesday. She rocks.
Wowza! Just Look At How Long This Kickass Buddy List Is!

Have you had some experience with the effects of smoking, and want to write a GUS diary or host an open thread? Please sign up in the Butt Can (Tip Jar), and name the day and time that works for you (AM, PM, late-night, early-bird...). Weekly GUS Diary Schedule (regular diarists featured in bold) is below. And look at all those open slots just calling your name!
Fri AM: Vacationland, returning flumptytail's favor
Fri PM: Open
Sat AM: effervescent
Sat PM: Open
Sun AM: gchaucer2
Sun PM: Open
Mon AM: Portia Elm
Mon PM: paulitics
Tue AM: gchaucer2
Tue PM: Open
Wed AM: Open
Wed PM: Vacationland
Thu AM: nokkonwud
Thu PM: James Earl
If you can spare a few hours, please consider hosting GUS. It doesn't have to be a permanent slot; it can be a one-time deal or just an open thread! Not sure where to start? Just ask for help in the Butt Can (Tip Jar). Seriously, it doesn't have to include specific elements or require all sorts of fabulous diary formatting skills. The regulars will make sure stuff gets carried over from diary to diary, so if you want to just tell your story or provide an open thread and host for a few hours, that's cool too. We would be very grateful, truly! You do not need to be perfect, you do not need to become a regular. Try it, you'll like it!!
