Senator Mark Begich (D. AK), author of the Protecting & Preserving Social Security Act, is directing his focus on another type of cut to Social Security:
Most Alaskans don’t know it, but there’s something called the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) in Social Security. Current or former public employees who’ve worked in the private sector -- teachers, law enforcement officers, public employees with private-sector night jobs -- get hit with the WEP.
What does the Windfall Elimination Provision do? It cuts out some of the Social Security benefits you’ve earned -- an average of $400 a month. And more than 60 percent of Alaska beneficiaries are losing that money.
Alaska seniors -- and seniors across the country -- rely on Social Security every month. They deserve all of the benefits. Sign the open letter to call for an end to the WEP right now.

I don’t know who thought that $400 is a “windfall.” To Alaska seniors, $400 a month could be the difference between making or missing a mortgage payment, affording groceries or going hungry, and buying prescription medications or cutting pills in half to make them last.
Cancelling benefits for public-sector employees is not “eliminating windfalls.” It’s terrible for the economic security of seniors. That’s why I’ve been working in Congress to get rid of the Windfall Elimination flaw in our Social Security system -- and there’s something you can do to help.
Sign the open letter to Congress to end the Windfall Elimination flaw in Social Security.
