Longtime Congressman Frank Wolf (R-Va.), first elected in 1980, announced today that he won't seek reelection in 2014.
This is a tremendous pickup opportunity for the Dems, as the district (Va-10) has grown increasingly purple over the years. The district went 50-49 for Mitt Romney in 2012, but 51-48 for President Obama in 2008. On the other hand, Wolf has been godo in the area of constutient services, often supporting government workers, and has never failed o get less than 57% in his elections.
For the future?
WaPo notes:
Democrats have already recruited Fairfax County Supervisor John Foust for the race. Among the Republicans being mentioned shortly after Wolf's retirement was state Del. Barbara Comstock, state Sen. Jill Holtzman Vogel and former congressman Artur Davis, who recently switched from Democrat to Republican and moved from Alabama to Northern Virginia.
