I don't know what to say about the film that wouldn't just spoil it, but what I can say is that there's nothing in theaters now or coming in the next couple of months that will be as worth your 2 hours than American Hustle. It's about the Abscam FBI string from the late 70s early 80s.
Amy Adams continues to push herself to new heights.
Christian Bale is INCREDIBLE.
Bradley Cooper is INCREDIBLE.
Yes, in a film in which Christian Bale tops his performance in The Fighter, Bradley Cooper is just as incredible.
Jennifer Lawrence gives another effortless pitch perfect nuanced performance. How old is she again?
Jeremy Renner has the less flashy part, but he is absolutely perfect in it.
Louis C. K. is hilar... yeah, Louis C. K. is in this movie. I had no idea. But he's hilarious! The final payoff of what seems like a merely chuckle worthy, maybe even groan worthy, running joke about a fishing story is literally impossible to not laugh out loud to.
There's a cameo that is pure awesome in a scene that is as absurd as it is tense and you will love it.
Christian Bale is possibly the luckiest son of a bitch of an actor working right now, because David O Russell has given him TWO of the most delicious characters for any actor to play in The Fighter and American Hustle. I just saw him in Out of the Furnace a couple of weeks ago and his performance in that was incredible too, so, maybe he's not lucky, maybe David's lucky to have found someone like Christian.
There is a scene between Christian and Jennifer and up to that point, Jennifer's character is a little small compared to the others, but she gets the BEST scene of the entire movie with Christian and the two of them are... I honestly can't be hyperbolic about this scene, because it's simply a scene between two virtuoso actors and it's amazing. And hilarious.
Amy Adams needs to win lots of awards for this movie. Also, I have now seen way too much of her boobs. I feel bad about it, cause she's just really out there and at the same time she's acting as this completely sympathetic character and it just feels wrong to get distracted by her boobs, but, obviously, when you see the film, you'll see what I am talking about. I mean, the only thing I can think that could have been done to improve this film is to maybe show her boobs about half as much as they did. But then again, it's part of her character and... she's brilliant.
I can't say this about a lot of movies, but honestly, I can't think of a simple weak performance in this film. Not from anyone. From the leads to the supporting roles. The attention to detail in this movie is amazing. I think it's probably as close to a perfect film as I have seen in a long time.
Of course... I still have the see the Coen Brother's latest this week. How in the world are there so many good movies in theaters right now? I know it's award season, but still. There are truly great films out right now. And this is one of them.
I guess in a way, I should thank super hero movies, because all of the stars of this film have or will star in a super hero movie. Bale in Batman. Amy in Man of Steel. Jeremy in Avengers. Jennifer in X Men. And next summer, Bradley is the voice of Rocket Raccoon in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Maybe David O Russell wouldn't be able to make movies like The Fighter or American Hustle if he didn't have big stars from super hero movies in them. Stars who happen to also be brilliant actors.
