Apparently, the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, a coalition of anti-gay sheriffs and homophobic supporters, held a rally on Saturday billed as a "call for an uprising" against marriage equality in Utah (reports FOX13). The story has been reported on in the Advocate, JoeMyGod, OnTopMag, and Towleroad.
From Towleroad:
Said Former Graham County, Ariz., Sheriff Richard Mack):
“The people of Utah have rights, too, not just the homosexuals. The homosexuals are shoving their agenda down our throats...That’s a lie. That’s an absolute lie [that the federal government's ruling overrules Utah's laws]. We have a right to raise our kids without homosexuals being part of the Boy Scouts, the schools and teachers and doing everything. They can be all that, but don’t shove your agenda down my kid’s throat. We have a right to raise our kids how we want not how you want."
It appears that things are heating up in Utah with regard to this marriage equality issue. Sheriff Richard Mack stated at the rally that county clerks who do not wish to marry same sex couples should begin refusing to if the Supreme Court denies the stay of Judge Shelby's ruling that the state has requested. That decision could come down at any time. According to Desert News, the rally was attended by about 200 people at the Highland Community Center in Highland, Utah. Sheriff Mack (also a former Provo police officer according to ontopmag) also told the crowd that it was up to law enforcement and everyday citizens to restore the state's gay marriage ban. He apparently believes that states' rights and sovereignty supersedes federal law and a federal court's judgment and interpretation of federal law. It could get interesting in the next few days (at least in some parts of the state).
