Rep. Pearce (R-NM) replies to a desperate person; says it's wonderful that she has the right to write him.

Ever get a form letter back from your Congressional Representative? (Ever get anything BUT a form letter?) But don't they at least choose a form letter that mentions your issue by name?
Not this guy. This is how far "representative" government has sunk. Talk about out of touch.
My friend Jill is articulate, talented, artistic, decent - and a survivor of traumatic brain injury. This letter of hers is uncharacteristically confrontational because she's reached the end of her rope. Look how much attention she gets. (She gave me permission to pass this on.)

(she writes)
I sent an email to my representative. It said:

"Dear Rep. Pearce,
You are personally responsible for taking food from me. I'm on permanent disability trying to survive on $710 from SSI, and you personally took food from me by cutting food stamps. What say you?
Thanks for representing me.
Your constituent,
Jill **"

Here's what he responded with. [sigh]

Dear Ms. **:

Thank you for contacting me to express your views. I appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to reach out to me regarding this important issue.

The only way to ensure our great republic continues to thrive is for citizens like you to exercise your First Amendment rights, and voice your opinion. This inalienable right must be cherished, and I thank you for making your voice heard.

Vice President Hubert Humphrey once said, “Freedom is hammered out on the anvil of discussion, dissent and debate.” The fact that you are helping to hammer out freedom speaks volumes about your character and patriotism.

During the 113th Congress I will consider many pieces of legislation important to all Americans. When considering legislation I will, as I always do, adhere to the principles that I was elected upon and take into account the many views of the people in the 2nd Congressional District.

Your correspondence is greatly appreciated and I will always take your thoughts into consideration when voting in the House of Representatives.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. Should Congress consider legislation regarding the issues of importance to you, I will be sure to keep your views in mind.

Steve Pearce

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

but those people in southern NM just keep on electing him.  We, up north, know better.

They're deadly because they are self-destructive. Slothful Pearce is slipping away before our eyes. 2014 is going to some election!

the opportunity to run against this jerk. Do either of those women have a chance to unseat him? I lived in Las Cruces for several years and went to a couple of his townhall meetings. Was never quite sure I'd get out alive as the crowd was "interesting" and maybe armed. His supporters are just as rude and intolerant as he and I'd jump for joy if he were ousted.

read a little more about Lara. Even if she turns out to be the bluest of Dems, she'll be 100% better than Pearce. Guess you can tell I loathe him.

I lived in Las Cruces during the election that Joe Skeen won on a write-in campaign, so I know that ANYTHING can happen in NM-02. Here's hoping we have something to celebrate in November.

        •  even though Leslie Endean-Singh (3+ / 0-)

is likely the more progressive candidate.

Rocky has standing in the NM Dem Establishment,  and that goes a long way in NM.  Got herself elected as a Democratic County Commissioner right there in Pearce's turf.  She is putting out a lot of email.

Whatever the specifics of her stances,  Lara has to be better than Pearce,  who has gone full-Monty T party.

Hardly a word from Ms. Endean-Singh.

      •  Only if the voters step up to the plate and (0+ / 0-)

do their duty. The meme that candidates are responsible for their own election merely serves to distance the electorate from their power to effect change.

Pearce's lengthy non-responsive email is just on the border of being offensive. Perhaps just a little more criticism will prompt him to leave in a huff.

Might be worth while following up with a missive to his office, but I bet his server will reject out-of-district communications.

        •  As expected, he's got a zip code filter. (0+ / 0-)

However, using the numbers for one of his local offices works. There is, apparently, some sensitivity to the possibility that their exclusive format won't go over well. So, now they hide behind some code of conduct that they have set up themselves -- sort of like the filibuster rule that was, supposedly, fixed in stone or mandated by some higher authority.

Rules aren't made to be broken, but they are made to be changed when circumstances demand.
If the House wants to claim that storing all those emails is too onerous, let them send them to the NSA. If the NSA stops collecting data wholesale, they'll have lots of room for Congress' mail.

I typically use the post office zip code in one of the small towns in the district.
