Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD)
House Democrats are planning to put Republicans on the spot over the minimum wage:
“We just announced that we’re going to be going back to Congress a week from now and we’re going to put a discharge petition in and get the minimum wage on the calendar,” Hoyer said on MSNBC’s “The Ed Show” on Thursday night. “We hope our Republican colleagues will join us so that we give the incentive for people to work, and when they work, they won’t be living in poverty.” [...]
Republicans, however, have largely opposed the effort, and the Democrats are looking to use the discharge petition to circumvent the Republican-controlled House leadership who won’t call the measure to the floor. The procedure would allow a vote on the bill, as long as a majority of members of the House support it.
“It will happen if we get some 20 to 25 Republicans to sign that bill,” Hoyer said.
Are there 20 to 25 Republicans who join the majority of voters in wanting the minimum wage to be raised to $10.10 an hour? Or are
all House Republicans going to stand in the way? I know where I'm placing my bet.
