Ever find a wad of cash?
Connect, unite and act. Sometimes you can do that around cash easier than around love.
On Valentines Day José finds an envelope on top of a table with about $500 in it. Did it then disappear between dirty dishes until he could stuff it in his pocket? It did not. It could've easily just vanished and no one would've been the wiser as to who was responsible. Instead, he went and found my son (the waiter for that table) to turn it into him. The unwritten rule in service is any unclaimed item (assuming no one ever comes back for it) on top of a table is in the waiter's tip domain. My son then came and reported it to me so that anyone calling looking for it would be able to retrieve it. Two weeks later and no one claimed it. Cat Jr. decided to split the money evenly with José.
Then during that two weeks something else happened. Last customers of the evening were loitering an hour past closing. Not quite as romantic as you see in the movies. They found their BMW's battery had died and José gave them a jump. He was off the clock and on his way home. They tried hard to give him $50, but José refused. Three times. He works two jobs. Go figure. Says to me almost apologetically, "Some day on the road I'll need help from a stranger."
The closest I myself ever came to finding a wad of cash was on a government website. I was so broke at the time that I was cutting my shekels in half (hat tip to ancient Maya counterfeiters who hollowed out Cacoa beans and stuffed 'em with clay). Found a few thousand owed to me that got me through the mean season.
Ever find a windfall of cash, or leave one behind for someone else to find?
