First of all I am not an economist.  I am not even an investor or understand anything about money markets.   I do understand being part of a corrupt system designed it appears to keep some people down and keeping them down.

You can disagree and point out where this won't work and why, but I have thought of this for years.  Why haven't think tanks thought of something similiar?

All we hear is cut the debt.   Get off food stamps.   Get a job.   There is an answer IMO but it requires a huge brave step.

We know the great economic collapse with big banks and mortgage companies stole many of our homes.   We did not get bailed out.  We lost jobs.  We got sick and we had no where to turn.    We lost homes.  We lost hope  and consumer buying power, while banks and big business was being helped.  There could have been a cheaper, less debt way to help the economy but of course would not have pleased the corporations and real one percenters.

If there had been a WPA works program designed similiar to FDR that included infrastrucure, mass transportation and solar along with green energy manufacturers plus wiping out all of the bad debt reported to the three credit reports..giving everyone a clean credit score with tax breaks for lending from the banks that got bailed out , we would well be out of the mess we are in.  We have enough roads, bridges, buildings, and other things that need repair in a huge way to employ folks.   We also have enough educational needs such as arts, music, education and climate control studies along with solar and wind power to employ many many people.

Small business would crop up giving jobs to people from local car lots to furniture and appliance stores along with software designers.   Marketing would be big for all the new business and people making a decent wage could afford the ACA ( tweaked) with premiums that are capped to keep price control with good healthcare.

It all starts and ends with jobs.   100,000 plus jobs a month. the thing we have now.. most at Burger King or McDonalds is small not even countable IMO.  With every credit score that fell below 700 was wiped clean could offer more opportunity for people to not only invest in their own small business if lenders would lend but it would provide homes to people in a works program to buy.   Am I looking at this all wrong?

If there were stipulations to invest in one's own future for grants or loans at low interest, how is that not better than millions of homeless, hungry, jobless people?
Growing farms that feed America?   Inspectors to inspect our food supply?  Do we not need these things?  Of course we do.

Tell me I am wrong.. I don't think so.  I also think churches...should be taxed.  The church that preach politics and cross over from separation of church and state.    They shape policy and they do it from the pulpit.  The Mega churches are not non profit.. No.   I also think that would add revenue in the kitty like nothing else.   Increase the taxes to at least where they were under Clinton for certain wealthy people.. Stop all of this Free trade stuff but have fair trade and nothing less.  If they want to preach against people instead of faith then they crossed the line of faith and political persusaion.  They want to keep their tax exempt status then shut the opinions up on Sunday morning about policy.

People could have borrowed from SBA or had jobs to save to open small business or maybe government grants and loans to  guarantee small business loans to employ then we would be out of this mess.   People could have decent jobs, homes, income and American should stop investing in ways to kill people.   We do that.  We think of ways to cut costs on food, healthcare, start wars and send tons of money to other places to preserve peace.. Why?  We should not be blackmailed to keep the peace.   I feel that happens a lot.

OK that is some of my idea but not all ...why can't legislators think of things like this?
It could not possibly be any worse than what we have.  Starving, jobless people shooting each other in the streets.

This is the 21st century and we need a better way than has been done for decades.  I hear all about too much Big government well who is fighting the wars?  Big government starts the wars and the poor fight them.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I don't feel I can comment on the substance of your suggestions, but I think it's good for us to share our ideas.  That's a prime virtue of democracy over authoritarianism...more ideas presented and more ideas considered.  And, aside from my personal blog, Daily Kos is my favorite place to present my ideas...even if they don't get recommends!  I don't believe we can or should leave the generation of political ideas to think tanks and legislators.  If our ideas have merit, there's a chance that they will catch on, and if they don't have merit, no harm done.

that fulfilled its 2nd Mission, to promote a Full Employment economy ...

    1)  Funding a permanent WPA -- to do the things that need to be done,

    and

    2)  Directly provide Student Loans, at the same interest rates they give the Banks;

that would solve a world of ills in no time.

Economic Growth is the Key -- Not Economic Austerity.

Thanks Vetwife, for the very practical, and commonsense rant.

    •  No, student loans at any interest are a bad idea. (0+ / 0-)

Students should not be indebted when they graduate. Returning state schools to 70's tuition levels - when summer and part time work paid for tuition - is the way to go. Anything else just increases the 1.2 US$T of student debt, no matter how low the interest rate.

Don't be taken in by a "solution" that only perpetuates the problem - even zero % is an unacceptably small improvement.

to then start their own business, just make sure that business isn't a lending institution, and make it your first business policy not to offer credit terms to customers -- cash on the barrel head.

Of course, all those wiped out accounts receivable might mean there aren't quite as many businesses around to offer jobs, but they probably deserved it.

It's all about the playing field for the uber-wealthy. As long as the economy is unstable and the playing field is full of mounds and holes then life for the serfdom of this country and others is easily controlled by them.
You have many valid, sensible points. But. That would amount to filling in the holes and flattening the mounds, uniting the hoi-polloi in a common quest. Levelling the field, inspiring and educating the masses is not in their best interest because now we're not so easy to control.

I believe it's Duncan Black (Atrios) who periodically mentions, between very accurate observations that "we are ruled by terrible people", that our government should "just give people free money".

He is absolutely correct. The U.S. had no trouble handing over several trillion dollars to bail out the banksters in the aftermath of the 2008 crash. And the Fed's 'quantitative easing' program is another ongoing corporate welfare program handing billions in zero interest loans to the banksters to profit from. All of this has been the worst kind of 'trickle down' horseshit, with the banksters permitting virtually none of it to trickle down to us.

Yet if the U.S. government just handed, say, $15,000 in cash to every citizen, what would happen? Gosh, people might get their teeth fixed. They might trade in that 24 year old oil burner on a newer car. They might pay for their kids' college rather than forcing them to take on massive debt. The entire economy might reboot toward full employment.

And the cost to the government would be a fraction of what they've already handed over to the banksters.

What's the downside of government printing and handing out free money? Well, it would cause a bit of inflation. Which means currently depressed wages and prices would rise a bit. Oh, and personal & educational debt would become gradually easier and easier to pay down, giving a break to consumers at the expense of the banksters who fucked up the world economy in the first place.

Which is why it will never happen.

felt it had a good merit of commonsense.   I think the country needs a dose of common sense.   You all seem to have plenty and it IS a control system...I have not figured that part out yet why inequality is better than happy consumers.   Thanks !

I believed should have been handed over.. 1 million to every citizen would have been cheaper than what we did.
We would have circulated the money and brought the economy right out of the pit.   The car industry would not have had to be rescued because all of the people would have bought a car ...a newer car and none of us would have jumped out of anything with golden parachutes.   We didn't even have a backpack.  Still don't all these years later.
