I wanted to share a speech I intended on delivering to my Republican colleagues on the floor of the Michigan Senate today as the offensive new "rape insurance" law they passed has now taken effect. Unfortunately, they adjourned the Senate today without giving me my constitutional right to give this statement, but while they may not have wanted to hear it, I wanted to share exactly what I had planned on saying to them.

I rise today to remind my Republican colleagues of what today is.

As of today, your rape insurance proposal is now the law of the land in Michigan.

Thanks to what every single one of you on that side of the aisle did, rape victims in Michigan that become pregnant from their attack will now be told by their doctor - and their private insurance company - that they’re on their own.

Yes, a victim of a sexual assault in Michigan will now have to face the reality that their Republican legislators – those who decry government involvement in health care on a daily basis - passed a law that does exactly that. Except it only applies to women, so apparently that doesn’t count.

And if taking away the rights of rape victims weren’t enough, thanks to what you did, Michigan women with wanted pregnancies who are told by their doctors that something has gone horribly wrong and their pregnancy must be terminated will be told that their government doesn’t think that’s necessary medical care.

They too will now face a reality that you have prevented their private insurance company from covering the exact care that’s needed, that their doctor recommends, and is in the best interest of their own health.

In short, it’s a whole new era of unequal health care you’ve created here today, an era in which women are treated as second class citizens and told their male dominated legislature and a the extremist special interest group that funds their election campaigns know far better about the types of health care coverage they should have than their own doctor does.

So I have to ask, why aren’t you speaking out proudly about this today?

Is this not exactly what you wanted?

Is this not exactly what your vote was in favor of?

Or is it because, god forbid, you actually know what you did is wrong? That you know your vote that created this disgusting law was the absolute wrong vote to make? That if you could go back in time, maybe you’d put the health and the rights of your wives and your daughters ahead of what Right to Life told you to do that day?

I know that’s true for at least some of you.

Some of you told me yourselves in private shortly after the vote was taken that you wished you had the courage to vote against this disgusting bill.

You know who you are. I don’t need to name any names here today. But if you came to me that day seeking absolution for what you did, I’m here to tell you that on behalf of the millions of women and young girls you belittled that day and whose lives you’ve hurt as a result, the answer is no.

The people of Michigan asked you not to create this law. You didn’t listen.

My colleagues and I shared deeply personal stories - stories that none of us should have had to speak about publicly but felt compelled to in an effort to get you to actually think about what you were about to do.

We tried in vain to show you that your actions would have very real and very serious consequences on countless women throughout our state, including some of us right here in this very building.

But you didn’t care. You didn’t even have the courage to stand up and respond, or utter a single word out loud as to why you were about to pass this terrible law.

You instead sat silent, content to push your voting buttons and cash the campaign check you’d soon be receiving from those who were telling you to do this.

And so, here we are today. Rape insurance is now the law of the land, and not a single one of you wants to mark the occasion. So I’m doing it for you.

As this horrible law takes effect today, I want you to remember what you did.

The next time you read a story in the news about a woman being raped, remember that you turned your back on her and told her that she doesn’t deserve every available medical option that’s available to her.

When you hear of a woman facing a difficult pregnancy, one that may sadly end prematurely, remember that you told her that her health and well-being is less important than your ability to get the endorsement of a radical special-interest group.

And when women from across the state ask you why you would do something so offensive, remember that you had a chance to stand up for them and put their interests ahead of the absolute worst of what politics can be, and you chose not to.

I’m proud to know that I come here every day and fight to make Michigan a better place for my 2 daughters. But I’m disgusted to know that they’re now growing up in a state in which this kind of misogyny is now the law of the land.

I had to agree when I heard Rachel Maddow say this about our legislature just last night: “Over the last few years, Michigan state government has become way more insane than anyone nationally gives them credit for.”

Well, you may not be getting enough credit for it nationally, but across our state, the people know this exact kind of insanity happening here at their Capitol all too well.

I’m going to keep fighting on their behalf, and I can promise you that there are a whole lot of people out there ready to keep on fighting with me.

I haven’t forgotten what today means. Nor have the people of Michigan.

And you better believe we’re going to remember it November as well.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

It is immoral!  The way this new Tea Party/GOP are shaming the country to the world has to end.
I honestly feel it is a National security issue at this point. It's American credibility on the line.
The small group of CPAC people in that audience voted for the guy who wants to put "Whites Only" signs in public places again. Point is, " a small group"!! Media failed to mention how small a group bothered to show up for  more red meat/hatred. Isn't it time they were stopped from claiming they represent us all?
These backwards people have long gone off the cliff from reasonable to shamefully backwards. They do not speak with facts or truth and it's time that media began doing it's job and asking questions, demanding facts be separated from games.
We need truth in media laws like Canada. We also need to stop being forced to buy that this small group of red meat, hatred pushing racists speak for us all. These people and Fox, must either wake up or be silenced. Would we put a functioning illiterate on TV and buy what they said as facts? What is the difference between that and these people? Unfortunately, some people don't seem to know one fact from these games. Is this GOP game any different than announcing on TV, the world will end tomorrow and causing a nation wide panic? Seriously, it's beyond ridiculous. It's embarrassing.

What about the ACA?  Can a state make a federally legal medical procedure illegal now that we have the ACA?  Wouldn't that constitute health care below the legal requirements and wouldn't insurance companies who didn't provide it for whatever reason be below standard?  That should make insurance companies react---in a sane country.  There's the rub.

The GOP of today, on their own, are enough of a reason to roll back regulations on media. It's one thing to have an opinion, but to purposely misinform millions, is quickly going to make this country be seen as a racist backwards ignorant country. No amount of money we waste on a Military will matter if no one stands up for America. Who would when this is on TV and the world is lead to assume"They represent real American's with thinking minds"? It's not just Political any more. Perhaps boycotting companies isn't enough. Perhaps media needs a lesson in choosing to do their job or be put off the air. This is why we need regulations on media ownership. Also, When politicians lie out right, someone needs to shame them out of office and make them step down. Cruz, Paul Ryan etc. lie out right and media helps. This new Insurance is just another American embarrassment to me. No wonder more and more people are moving away and giving up their passports and citizenship. This is beyond nonsense, it embarrasses me to the core that anyone would vote for this law or that American women, in any state, in 2014 would need crime insurance..

  •  Not logical (4+ / 0-)

So do they intend on making all crime the responsibility of the victim(s) now? We all pay for crime every day and if one of the consequences is paying for the victim of the crime to rehab (mentally, physically or otherwise), then that is society's responsibility. If I had to pay for an abortion, I would make sure that I ruin the life of the crime perpetrator in return (possibly ending it). If they can commit a crime and I have to pay, then that means I get to commit a crime against them and they have to pay (for their own funeral). There is a reason rape is a crime just as there is a reason murder is a crime. We can't have a society without recognizing crime for what it is and helping the victims. That is called anarchy.

I commend Michigan state Senator Gretchen Whitmer for the remarks she'd intended, but was denied, to make to her Republican colleagues marking this day of infamy in the state's history, when the new "rape insurance" law became effective. The only thing worse than the 100% GOP vote of approval for this legislation is the hypocrisy of the ones who have privately confessed to wishing they'd had the balls to vote no. These spineless Republicans don't even act with the courage of their convictions, instead selling their votes to radical pro-life groups.

Although I hate to say it, Senator Whitmer is being either completely naive or unable to face the sad truth regarding her assertion that the Michigan voters will remember this terrible law when the November elections roll around. AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN. For some inexplicable reason, America's fickle voters have notoriously and shamefully short memories. Remember how badly the Republicans' approval ratings plummeted during and immediately after the government shutdown they caused last October? Well, those numbers have bounced back up, and now President Obama and the Democrats are taking a hit in their popularity among the American people.

The problem that the Democrats have failed to realize and worked toward remedying is that with policies such as Michigan's revolting "rape insurance" law, it's the Republican-led STATE LEGISLATURES, NOT CONGRESS, that are pushing this type of legislation through. Until liberal voters start going to the ballot boxes in special, mid-term and off-year elections, this will not change. Progressive and independent voters claim to detest the GOP overall in general, but they aren't singling out specific conservative candidates in important local and state elections. Democrats must begin targeting certain uber-conservative politicians in local and statewide elections in order to effect overall policy changes toward more progressive causes. Until we do that, then the states and Congress will continue to legislate issues like women's reproductive health, religion and morality. If we keep doing what we've been doing, then we'll keep getting what we've been getting. If Democrats aren't careful and don't become proactive in effecting changes in the makeup of the local, state and federal governments and the laws they pass, then progressives' complacency could very well be our downfall come November.

My comment is what a bunch of ball-less wonders they have in Michigan!  If they can dictate women's health then women should have a say about mens health care.  No more Viagra, no more penis pumps.  I'd even go as far as telling women in Michigan tell them NO MORE SEX!  I hope Michigan's voters vote out these ball-less wonders and get some candidates with brains and gumption.

AND I THOUGHT OHIO IS BAD!  One thing is abundantly clear to me: Hitler was absolutely correct in his assessment that his regime would rise again.  In his last moments with Bormann Goebbels and other Party big-wigs he said that not only would his ideology survive its temporary defeat, but a new and more powerful version would rise and establish a much greater future for his ideas than even he could imagine.  Our complicity with Hitler through the Bushes and Nixon/Reagan with their fierce hatred of Communism, has finally surfaced for what it was all along.  Racism, Nationalism, Power exercised by an oligarchic plutocracy would succeed, and his dream of a 4th Reich is now surfacing in our city, country, State, and Federal ruler-ships.  Aryan Supremacy, Genocide, Genetic Experimentation, Eugenics, Euthanasia, Abortion, Survival of the Fittest, Law of the Jungle: (ideas as olde as humanity itself) continue to reappear sometimes with new packaging, but the same old, same old, tried and failed ideas persist!  That is because man is inherently an animal. a savage, from the Island of Dr. Moreau without conscience and given to his own design destined to self-destruct as all other great civilizations rose and fell ~ SO WILL THIS ONE!

After witnessing the advances decades ago, it is mind-boggling to see all the back-sliding on women's reproductive rights recently.  But there were signs that this might be coming 20 years ago.  It started when most voters weren't watching this issue because they assumed it was a done deal.  The pressure from the right has been relentless.  And moderate (and even some left-leaning) voters accepted candidates who weren't willing to stand up for women's rights.

Now there are parts of the country where women's rights have been severely degraded.  Hopefully more moderate voters will finally take notice and say "enough".

Thank you Senator Whitmer for being a strong advocate for women's rights.  I hope Michigan voters will continue to support you and will recognize that they need to prioritize this area when they go to vote next time.

Thank you for continuing to challenge the bullies in the Republican majority who have perverted democracy in Lansing to push their callous agenda. I'm ashamed to tell people I'm from this backward state, and I hope I live to see these corrupt misogynists and their spineless rubber-stamp governor removed from power.

Thank you, Sen. Whitmer, for standing up against this abominable law, for marking its deplorable entry into effect, and for fighting for the rights and dignity of all Michiganders, women and men, but most especially women, since their rights are especially targeted by the Republicans in the legislature. Keep fighting the good fight, and know that we support you in that fight.
