For all the Things That Are Wrong with the Daily Kos system
Search is strange, sometimes, so I make no apologies for any discrepancies among the following numbers. All numbers are from the period of 2/1/14 through 3/1/14
Diaries by Tip Jar count: 4,200 (does not count deleted diaries, including Spam deletes, or diaries with custom tip jars)
Average diaries per day (29 day period): 144.83
Average per hour: 6, or 1 diary every 10 minutes. (Note: February was a slow month for diaries)
Number of users who published one or more diaries: 921
Diaries with one or more HRs in the Tip Jar: 45 - 4%
Diaries with 5 or more HRs in the Tip Jar: 20 - 2.2%
Diaries with 5 or more of both Tips and HRs: 4 - .43%
Users who published diaries during that period and were since bojoed: 79
Number of comments published: 254,234 (includes tip jars, spam, etc., but not necessarily tip jars from deleted diaries)
Number of users who commented: 4,145
Number of those commenters bojoed during or since that period: 213
Comments with 5 or more HRs: 150
Comments with more than 2 HRs: 218
Comments with 2 hrs: 100
Comments with 1 hr: 221
Total comments with HRs: 539
Comments with 5 or more of both Tips and HRs: 31
And the point of all this?
This is not the picture of a site torn apart by factionalism, or omnipresent HR abuse. All things considered, the level of civility is incredible. Considering that this is the internet, and that most of the users are posting anonymously, it's fricking unbelievable.
For the vast majority of users, HRs are not a problem. Only .21% of comments ever see an HR. Only .059% ever hit the "piling on" level. Only .012% descend into an HR fight. When 99.8% of all comments and 96% of all diaries manage to avoid HRs entirely, this is not a problem which should create any serious demand for a better moderating system, or major changes in policy.
