He's rambling about guns and wondering why there are now so many media there, why they haven't been paying more attention to him about some pet "gun issue".
He's now equating slavery with "home" for African Americans. He sounds confused as hell. Claims to have observed the Watts riots, wondering why black people would burn their own houses.
This is a train wreck and it's getting worse.
Feel free to watch and comment.
Now he's comparing blacks with Hispanics...militia goons are cheering him on...
He has some people in he audience throwing him softball questions. It's not really a news conference, more like a propaganda-fest to save his ass.
AND we're done! Nothing new, just a confused white guy hiding behind a podium draped with the flag.
Thought it'd be more interesting...
RECAP--He was in Watts (probably a lie) in the late 60's (the dates he gave would have post-dated the Watts riots). Somebody gave him a ride in a car. He saw black people in Las Vegas. He wonders whether Negroes are better off today than they were as slaves. He implies Spanish people are better than Blacks. Responding to a softball thrown up to him by a Tea Party guy, he says everyone should be treated equally under the law.
Bundy was rambling, somewhat defensive, seemed to be prepared for a few pre-screened questions but way, way out of his depth. He wasn't asked any questions by major media, as far as I saw.
"Conference' lasted about ten minutes. Here's a very recent take with video of the "conference." Medialite calls it "incredibly bizarre," which is about right.
More here from Huffpo:
Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy doubled down on his controversial remarks about slavery Thursday, insisting that perhaps the "Negro people" were better off as the property of white owners because then, at least, they had gardens and chickens to tend to instead of being dependent on the government.
"Cliven Bundy's a-wondering about these people," said Bundy, referring to himself in the third person. "Now I'm talking about the black community. I'm a-wondering. Are they better off with their young women aborting their children? Are they better off with the young men in prison? Are they better off with the older people on their sidewalks in front of their government-issued homes with a few children? Are they better off, are they happier than they was in the South in front of their homes with their chickens and their gardens and their children around them, and their man having something to do? Are they better off?"
More from
TPM:
Bundy offering a sort of stream-of-conscience take on the reaction to his comments about black people and slavery. He made no apology, and instead used part of his time to scold the media for its coverage of him.
He stood on a makeshift outdoor stage decked with American flags, with supporters occasionally shouting their approval of him. At the end of the event, a few supporters cursed and yelled at the reporters. Bundy, meanwhile, continued sharing thoughts on "the Negro community" in comments that tracked with the attempted clarification Bundy had given to conservative radio hosts throughout the day.
In short, nothing that would alter the status quo, or coax back into his camp the Republicans who are running from him like scalded dogs.
