In traditional American Indian societies, water was viewed as a sacred element. Water was important for purification, for healing, and for the maintenance of harmony with the world. Water was often seen as symbolizing humility as water seeks out the lowest levels. Young people learned about the importance of persistence by listening to the many stories about water and by observing the actions of water in streams and lakes.
