Yep, it's the sound of Rick Santorum NOT flapping his breeder yap over the overturning of Pennsylvania's ban on same-sex marriage.
Perhaps he WOULD be flapping his yap, if the judge that made the ruling hadn't been fully ENDORSED by Rick himself.
Gay marriage is legal in Pennsylvania today, following a ruling by U.S. District Judge John Jones. Pennsylvania had gotten into the pre-emptive-ban game early in 1996, and that ban is now gone—Pennsylvanians with gay marriages recognized in other states can set up shop in Pittsburgh or Philadelphia or (if it's what you're into) Braddock.
Who saw this coming? I'm going to guess "not Rick Santorum." Twelve years ago, in his second and final term as the U.S. senator from Pennsylvania, Santorum urged the Senate to confirm Jones and Kit Connor.
What little Ricky said, back in 2002, concerning the George W. Bush appointment of Jones to the bench:
“Attorneys Jones and Conner are highly qualified to assume the important role of Judge and the duty of protecting the Constitution and ensuring the effective operation of our judicial system,” Santorum said. “Since the onset of the war against terrorism, our federal judiciary has taken on an even higher level of importance, and it is imperative that we provide our courts with the resources necessary to enforce the rule of law. These judgeships are vital to our national security goals, and I urge my colleagues to work with the President to fill these vacancies in a timely manner.”
In this instance, at least, Rick was right. But the Constitution isn't what Judge Jones protected.
He protected the rights of the citizens of Pennsylvania, and by extension, all of us, for whom the Constitution was written.
Haven't seen any statements by Rick. Not even on his
Facebook page. Perhaps he's swallowed his own heterosexual tongue.
Others there are lambasting him.
Scott Lanway Hey Rick, how's it feel to know that a judge you recommended just struck down Pennsylvania's ban on marriage equality—something you vehemently oppose?
Frank Conway According to Judge John E. Jones III, a George W. Bush appointee, Pennsylvania’s ban — like the many other bans that have fallen recently — violates same-sex couples’ equal protection under the law. “We are a better people than what these laws represent, and it is time to discard them into the ash heap of history,” he concluded.
Mark Andrew Croft Hey Rick, will you talk about the Judge who overturned the gay marriage ban in Pennsylvania? You know, the same judge YOU RECOMMEND to George W Bush to appoint to the Federal bench!
Jane Frankland Thanks, Mr. Santorum for wholeheartedly recommending to GWB that Judge John E. Jones, III be appointed to the federal bench. The good judge just overturned the gay marriage ban in PA. Way to go, Rick Santorum! LOL!!!!!
Why not give him a jingle and let him know that we know it's ALL. HIS. FAULT.
Or, if you're feeling more kind...................A BIG thank you!!!!!!
