Good Morning Guys,
The first thing I read in the morning is a series of listservs related to my work. These communities have been very helpful in issues that I need to know about my work, helping me find out what is going on and networking.
However. This morning there was an email from one of the listserv moderators to the whole group: "The I have been stranded in a foreign country and need money fast "- email. So, obviously someone hacked the moderators account and sent it to all in the moderator's address book.
What kind of exposure do I have if I am on a listserv where one of the email accounts has been hacked? Is there anything I can do to protect my email address and my email addressbook from these hackers? Aside from the obvious of not replying to bogus emails or clicking on attachments, etc.?
Not being a tekkie, I may be asking obvious if not ignorant questions. Just because they have hacked the moderator's email and addressbook, they won't necessarily have access to my address book, right? What do they have access to of mine?
The other issue that occurred to me is that there is a lot of confidential information discussed on these listservs, not by your's truly, but I have often shaken my head at the amount of stuff that has appeared on these listservs with people feeling that they were in the security of a closed room. UGH. So, if someone can hack into an email, then can they also read all these emails under that person's eaddress?
Is there anything more that I can do to safeguard my computer and addressbook from this point forward?
As I said, my tekkie knowledge is limited but I wanted to ask because I feel a wee bit nekid twisting in the wind.
Appreciate some guidance here.
Thanks.
