That John McCain has proven himself to be an extremely poor judge of others is well documented. There are the obvious choices of this brainless tundra-dwelling grifter and this pathetic has-bin desperate to extend his 15 minutes of fame, but they're not the only examples. Need I remind you that in 2008, McCain's reported top choice for Treasury Secretary was Phil freaking Gramm, until Gramm's "nation of whiners" comments made him radioactive. McCain's judgment of people appears about as sound as Warren G. Harding's.
And this weekend, we got another example of it, when he was asked, with Eric Shinseki having resigned as VA Secretary, just who should replace him. The answer is...wait for it...Tom Coburn?!
"He (Coburn) is very familiar with the Veteran Affairs issue (and) he is the greatest reformer in the United States Senate," McCain said, according to KTAR News. "I believe that Dr. Tom Coburn would be the best possible replacement."
Okay, once you're done howling with laughter at the description of "Dr. No" Coburn as "the greatest reformer in the United States Senate" (this is the man, after all, who seems to think
roving gangs of lesbians lurk in Oklahoma bathrooms waiting to pounce), think again of the ludicrousness of McCain's suggestion. Not only is Coburn far too conservative to ever be part of Obama's administration (their
odd-couple personal friendship aside), did McCain forget
why Coburn is retiring from the Senate at the end of this year?
Coburn, 65, has been suffering from a recurrence of prostate cancer and has hinted privately to reporters and in a published interview last week that his health troubles might force him to leave office before his current term expires in early 2017. He had already announced that he would not run for reelection, meaning his decision will have him exit two years sooner than previously planned.
McCain's in the Senate, right? He is aware that his fellow Senator is quitting to fight cancer, right? Or, like
a certain Benghazi briefing he skipped out on, did he just miss it because he was too busy preening for the cameras and snuggling with Lindsey Graham and Kelly "Curly Joe" Ayotte? And if he did know, why would he think Coburn would risk his life and already precarious health to take on a new and likely much-more demanding job, given the necessary work waiting at VA?
It's just McCain's opinion. Obama will neither care nor really pay attention. Coburn won't either. It's just another example of McCain's poor judgment and why we should be thankful he was never President.
Now go yell at some more clouds, old man.
