Privatize, Privatize
A letter in a red-state newspaper today argues that we should privatize ALL of government, because government is so wasteful and inefficient. Then it advises, “Vote conservative, like our founders.”
Yep, privatize everything. Start with the military. Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz promised that invading Iraq would cost us only one billion dollars, and we'd make hundreds of billions by controlling Iraq's oil. But our government-operated military couldn't pull it off, and we lost a few trillions. Halliburton, though, as our primary contractor to the military, made billions in profits from supplying hugely overpriced meals and gasoline to the army under a no-bid contract. It doesn't matter that Halliburton's profits came from the government's borrowed money. Profit is profit.
"Vote conservative, like our founders," the letter advised. Great idea. Those founders were so conservative that they starved and fought and died to break the shackles of that liberal King George. Oh, now, don't tell me that King George wasn't a liberal. You'll ruin my day.
