Forget pie for the moment.
Last week we had an influx of trolls via OllieGarkey's Men's Rights diary, that continued into the woman's rights diaries in the next few days.
There are a lot of really, really nice people diarying and commenting at Daily Kos. That shouldn't be a problem, right? But one set of comments that stuck with me, after a couple of days of reading through various diaries, were the ones that said "Help, I'm out of donuts, and this needs to be HR'd". After the first day or so, most trolls were taken out with an absolute minimum of HRs, and lesser instances of trolling were passed over. Because, I think, very few people are actually comfortable giving out HRs, and I'm certainly not complaining about it.
Under normal conditions, this doesn't matter, and a limit of 5 HRs a day provides all that are needed, usually with a few left over (speaking for myself, anyway), even if you hunt for trolls and spam diaries assiduously.
What about when the trolls come flocking, though? It would be simple to say "Go back to a 24 hour delay before you can post", but generally the benefits of immediate posting have outweighed the problems, from what I can gather from the Ask Me Anything diaries.
So what I'd like to propose as one possible solution, if the programmers don't want to kill me for it, is that Spam and Troll HRs - the ones that hit the first or second post of a new user, be replenished automatically as/if the user goes BOJO. Because I don't think we've seen the last of major troll influxes, and it would be nice to have a better way to handle them.
