With the Rethuglican run-off coming, it's high time Daily Kos officially takes a position in this important race and endorses the incumbent, Republican Thad Cochran, for the Rethuglican nomination against whackadoodle Chris McDaniel.
Cochran's record in his tenure since 1978 is what one would expect for a six-term Republican from that bastion of progressive thought, Mississippi.
From Wikipedia
In 2005, he was one of nine senators who voted against the Detainee Treatment Act of 2005, which prohibited "inhumane treatment of prisoners, including prisoners at Guantanamo Bay".
In March 2009, his former aide, Ann Copland, pled guilty to swapping legislative favors for event tickets and other gifts from lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Copland worked for Cochran for 29 years.
Cochran opposed President Barack Obama's health reform legislation; he voted against the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in December 2009,[12] and he voted against the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010
In April 2010, it was reported that Cochran finished at the top of the Citizens Against Government Waste's list of congressional earmarks, having requested a total of $490 million in earmarks
Cochran is the second-most senior Republican in the Senate.
Why, by all that's holy, should Daily Kos endorse this turd?
The Democratic nominee, Travis Childers, is no peach, but he IS, at least nominally, a Democrat. He has no chance of beating Cochran in November. His chances of beating Cochran's Teabagger challenger, Chris McDaniel, are somewhat better as it stands today, but McDaniel is a prime candidate for at least one meltdown between now and November. The nursing-home-photography caper can still come home to roost much closer, the "camping in the courthouse" caper has not yet matured and may well not do so before the run-off, and he has a demonstrated propensity for hanging out with and hiring idiots, so we could get three or four more equally stupid episodes by November.
An endorsement of Cochran by Daily Kos would energize McDaniel's Teabagger base, which in turn will cause further disgust among "normal" Rethuglicans in Mississippi, certainly not enough to get most of them to vote Democratic in November but turn-out and enthusiasm in November could well be affected.
And making Teabagger heads explode is ALWAYS a good thing.
Senator Thad Cochran has The Baculum King's full support in his run-off, and I invite all of Daily Kos to join me in endorsing him.
