Received this e-mail from Senator Mark Begich (D. AK):
Last month, thousands of college students in Alaska tossed their caps into the air as members of the class of 2014. These students are walking into the workforce with a world-class education -- but they’re also carrying an average of $28,782 in debt.
That’s a heavy load to haul as graduates go out into the world. Moreover, those students will have to pay interest rates that are way, way higher than the rates the big banks pay on their own loans. It’s not fair, and it’s holding back an entire generation from starting businesses, buying homes, and getting ahead in life.
I’m joining with Senator Elizabeth Warren and others to reform our student loan system, and we need your support. If you think student borrowers deserve the same low rates as banks, then I hope you’ll sign our petition.

Last year, Congress acted to lower the rates available to new student borrowers, but obstructionists refused to let current borrowers refinance their loans at those same new rates.
That means that people who’ve already taken out student loans don’t get any relief. And that means that current borrowers will continue to pay higher rates until we do something about it.
Student loan reform would put money back in the pockets of millions of student borrowers and help them start their post-college life on a solid footing. It would also let their parents breath a big sigh of relief. We can do this, and with your help, we will -- add your name to our petition.
