The GOP's war on women, war on minorities, war on the poor--really, a war on anyone who isn't a rich white cisgendered male. They're also fighting the war on the ghey, but even they know that they're losing that war badly.
There is another war that the GOP is fighting, one they have been allowed to slip almost unnoticed on: The War on Human Health.
That's right. The GOP has very quietly, and very effectively, been fighting an all-out war against human health. And though this includes their militant hatred of the ACA, it goes much deeper than that. Below is a tiny subset of the many, many examples of this.
-Five of the 6 states with the highest teen pregnancy rates are Red, and 5 of the 6 states with the lowest rates are Blue. These kinds of numbers are why Western Europe's teen pregnancy rates are much lower than ours. And contrary to one of the Right's many, many lies on this subject, this is not the result of abortion.
-The assault on the birth control mandate. Enough said.
-Slut-shaming and gross misunderstandings of female reproduction are real. "Legitimate rape" and "God intended it to happen" gaffes are merely the tip of the iceberg. There exists a deeply-rooted culture of patriarchy in our society that is still alive and well within the Republican party.
-During the tobacco lawsuits of the 1990s, Republicans eagerly and willingly took Big Tobacco's side, because freedom instead of health.
-The assault on the ACA. Enough said.
-Environmental health? Oh where do we even begin with this one. Not including the enormous problem of carbon dioxide emissions, Republicans have fought tooth-and-nail against common-sense environmental regulations that would reduce the number of toxins in our skies, seas, and rivers.
Again, this is but a starting list. I am sure that most of you could easily extend it quite a bit.
We see this war on health as a common theme throughout history, too. It was fear and superstition--hallmarks of conservatism--that fueled the Bubonic plague, impeded the advancement of modern medicine, and now threatens to roll back the positive changes of the last couple of centuries. Conservatives are engaged in a full-blown war on health, and it is long past time that we become aware of it and begin to stop them on this destructive path.
