Over the past month, Twitter accounts have been suspended and tweets have been blocked in Pakistan; a Twitter user has recently been jailed in Turkey for a “blasphemous” tweet. In Pakistan and other theocracy-based states, blasphemy laws are key tools used by those in power to actively persecute minorities
The New York times covered how Twitter recently gave the government in Pakistan Carte-blanche censorship abilities at http://www.nytimes.com/...
A coalition of secular and humanist groups lead by Ex-Muslims of North America has put together a day of protest (today) using the hashtag #TwitterTheocracy to highlight the problem. You can read more details at http://www.exmna.org/...
We have groups all across the US, UK & Canada supporting the effort. Since we launched the campaign there has been a deluge of tweets and the Pakistani Government took notice and banned the petition site itself

We hope our fellow humanists at DailyKos will join the effort and if they have contacts within Twitter voice their disapproval directly while stating that we can not compromise on basic human rights such as freedom of expression
