GUS (Gave Up Smoking) is a community support diary for Kossacks in the midst of quitting smoking. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. If you are quitting or even just thinking of quitting, please join us! We kindly ask that politics be left outside.
You can also click the GUS tag to view all diary posts, or access the GUS Library. Want to make sure you never miss us? Follow (♥) the GUS tag to keep GUS in your Stream and easily find the link to the latest one. It's just that easy!
A message to ALL quitters (and would-be quitters): You don't have to avoid GUS if you have a failed quit. We won't give you a bad time or nag you. We consider the failed quits as "practice" for the real quit.
Where DOES the time go?
I am just realizing this week that we're coming up fast on the fifth anniversary of the founding of this little community. Five years!!! GUS started in June 2009 and has been chugging along, in some form or another, ever since. We don't really have a formal structure, many hard and fast rules, or even anybody officially "in charge," and (shaking fist, grumpy old man style) we like it that way! It seems to work for us.
The official GUS anniversary date is June 15th, which is coming up this weekend. Love to have someone host on Saturday the 14th, and to make sure we have something posted on Sunday itself (hopefully gchaucer2 will have internet access!), but even if we don't, that's one thing about this little community that could: it keeps on going, even with the occasional blip or bump along the way.
I could watch these dudes high five all day long. It's hypnotic!
There are lots of GUS folks we don't see anymore, or as often (and who are much missed) and---if that monster Buddy List is any indication---lots of GUS folks we have yet to meet. And we can probably count more than a few people who have quit, at least in part, with the help of this little community. We've managed to weather several Pie Fights and survive countless Meta-caines (those suckers are worse than a Sharknado!), providing a welcoming, mostly politics-free haven of shiny distractions, cat photos, recipes, YouTube videos, and endless digressive comment threads which I think have collectively done some good here at DKos, all things considered.
I've written more than 250 GUS diaries in the last five years. I've probably repeated myself more than once on most GUS-related topics (forgive me, but, you know, 250+ of these babies, it's kind of inevitable). I've had schedule glitches and missed deadlines (not so great) and the rare trip to the Recommended or Rescued lists (much nicer), and just about everything in between. Most of all, I've found a wonderful group of people here, all of whom are either trying to do a really hard thing---quitting smoking---or are here to help support other people who are trying to make this major behavioral change.
To everyone who has shown up, hosted, tipped & rec'd, helped out, kept track, herded cats, filled in, offered support, pitched in with your two cents (except you, random militant pipe dude! You did not grasp the community mission statement, and for that, we shun you!), posted pictures or songs or movie clips or GIFs, made someone laugh, provided encouragement, shared your story, or otherwise dangled shiny objects in front of this bunch of sometimes twitchy but mostly well-meaning folks, I offer my thanks. We wouldn't be here without you.

Have you had some experience with the effects of smoking, and want to write a GUS diary or host an open thread? Please sign up in the Butt Can (Tip Jar), and name the day and time that works for you. If you can spare a few hours, please consider hosting GUS. It doesn't have to be a permanent slot; it can be a one-time deal or just an open thread! Not sure where to start? Just ask for help in the Butt Can (Tip Jar). Seriously, it doesn't have to include specific elements or require all sorts of fabulous diary formatting skills. The regulars will make sure stuff gets carried over from diary to diary, so if you want to just tell your story or provide an open thread and host for a few hours, that's cool too. You do not need to be perfect, you do not need to become a regular, and you would make some quitters very happy.
