The Washington Post had a very interesting article today with an analysis of why Cantor (the warlock)  lost.

The major points were that all of his advertisements just drew attention to the fact that Brat even existed and was a viable alternative. That in attacking Brat they caused the very people who are conservative to believe that he was opposed by the inside Washington crowd thereby increasing their belief that he was a serious alternative.

The article also describes the change to the district that became important to the race and their desire to keep turnout high at about 48,000 (2012 primary turnout). As it turns out turnout soared and that became a serious problem.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Interesting lessons to be learned indeed! (0+ / 0-)

I expected a plethora of articles from both msm, local media and blogs on why Cantor lost. This is an interesting one and there will be many more!

His disapproval rate was 64%.  30% approved of him.  He didn't even really bother campaigning in his home district.

Eric was at a fundraiser for some guy in Long Island on voting day.  The town talked of Cantor's motorcades sweeping into town once in a blue moon & his rude, disdainful staff.

His pollster told him he would win by 34%.  Eric opted out way before he lost.

Now its on.......Eric Cantor, the Lobbyist.

  •  Brat also had a shit load of Dark Money (0+ / 0-)

funding his campaign.  The Koch camp just warned off any misbehaving Republicans who thought they could move a little left toward some kind of reasonableness.  I'm betting the warning will be duly noted.  Watch them all dance right again.

Newt 2012. Sociopath, adulterer, hypocrite, Republican.

  •  Cantor lost, yes. But Brat won also. (0+ / 0-)

Cantor did everything to cause himself to lose. But Brat ran a very smart campaign on very little money. I wrote a diary about it here

Brat had only 1/40th of the money that Cantor had. Cantor used his cash to put out tv ads complaining about Brat that turned out to give Brat name recognition. Cantor also plastered yards with signs as many as 4 signs in the same yard. Cantor also ignored the district. He only visited once. He ran the crappiest campaign in a long time.

Brat spammed the Internet with lots of tweets and Facebook posts. Great bang for almost no buck. He also did the gladhanding and worked the district.

Brat is a lunatic, but he ran a great campaign. We should learn from it.
