Shandon, Cork, Ireland - Cork Honors It's Rebel Daughter, Mother Jones
"CORK MOTHER JONES FESTIVAL
Tuesday 29th July to Friday 1st August 2014
Mary Harris Jones, Cork's Rebel Daughter"
The Spirit of Mother Jones Festival will be held again this Summer and will celebrate the life of the enigmatic Mother Jones, a woman held in high regard in this area. Be sure to come and join in!
In 2012 Shandon was the location for the inaugural Mother Jones Festival which celebrated the 175 Anniversary of the birth of Mary Harris nearby. The festival was hugely successful, receiving coverage throughout Ireland and America and placing the ancient Shandon Quarter in international focus.
The Cork Mother Jones Committee felt Shandon should continue to honour Mother Jones by highlighting and providing a platform for discussing labour history, trade union campaigns for fair working conditions and social issues in the setting of the birthplace of Mother Jones.

At Facebook:
About
To maintain, improve and promote the burial site, surrounding area and memory of the Union Miner's Cemetery and Mary Harris "Mother" Jones monument.
Union Miners' Cemetery
Located in Mount Olive, Illinois, about 50 miles north (and a bit east) of St Louis, Missouri:
Beyond the wrought iron gate to the little burial ground rises a granite obelisk on which is a great medallion bearing the likeness of Mother Jones. She is guarded on either side by a larger-than-life bronze statue of a coal miner with his sledge. At the base is a simple stone nestled in the grass, Mother Mary Jones.

"
Mother Jones Monument in Illinois to Be Restrored"
-by Jim Suhr, Associated Press, June 18, 2014
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Union workers are chipping in to give a makeover to a monument for firebrand labor activist Mother Jones, more than 80 years after their predecessors and school kids scrimped pennies during the Great Depression to build the towering structure at her Illinois gravesite.
Local politicians joined labor leaders Tuesday in a union-owned Mount Olive cemetery northeast of St. Louis to announce that a drive led by the AFL-CIO cobbled together more than $60,000 for the cause. Donors, from more than 100 different union groups, come from 17 states, stretching from California to New York and contributing anything from $5 to $5,000.
"The legacy of Mother Jones is one we treasure," Michael Carrigan, the Illinois AFL-CIO's president said during a ceremony this week announcing the fund-raising results.
