Lawmakers slam veterans health bill cost estimate

June 24, 2014 - Cost estimates of up to $50 billion a year for a veterans emergency medical care bill drew sharp criticism on Tuesday from lawmakers who said they were grossly inflated and would complicate negotiations over final details of the legislation.

The measure, with slightly differing versions passed by both the Senate and House of Representatives, would allow veterans a two-year period to seek private care at the Department of Veteran Affairs' expense if forced to endure long waits at the agency's facilities or if they live more than 40 miles away.

House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller said Republicans on a negotiating panel want to find savings to offset the costs of the measure, but they believe the Congressional Budget Office estimates are unrealistic.   read more>>>

In this present, so called scandal, anyone hear these leaders of, Rep Miller and political ideology wanting to privatize for corporate profit off the peoples treasury, actually offering changes and demanding those they serve Sacrifice, I haven't and haven't for decades!!

Sen. Bernie Sanders told Conservatives: "If you can't afford to take care of your veterans, than don't go war. These people are bearing the brunt of what war is about, We have a moral obligation to support them." February, 26th, 2014

"Why in 2009 were we still using paper?" VA Assistant Secretary Tommy Sowers "When we came in, there was no plan to change that; we've been operating on a six month wait for over a decade." 27 March 2013

VA doctors only see ten patients a day, don't have the facilties or staff to handle more
June 25, 2014 - Veterans Affairs Department doctors see only about ten patients a day at VA medical centers even with veterans waiting about 115 days for primary care appointments, officials told a House panel Monday.

"The difference between this estimated capacity and our current workload represents the amount of additional care we could potentially absorb to address veterans waiting for care," said VA Assistant Deputy Secretary Thomas Lynch at a June 23 House Veterans Affairs Committee hearing.

VA is developing new standards for provider capacity that take into account the need for urgent medical services.   read more>>>

Veterans for Peace discuss VA health care, funding
19 June 2014 - Local members of Veterans for Peace gathered Thursday to voice concerns about the "massive under-funding, massive under-staffing and effort to privatize" the Veterans Administration that they said has been occurring for the last 15-20 years.

The VA currently enrolls 9.1 million of the estimated 21.6 million veterans living in the U.S.

Buzz Davis, an Army veteran who served in South Korea from 1967-70, said the VA budget hasn't increased enough to correspond with the country's growing number of veterans and its aging population. The U.S. has a propensity to forget its veterans after they return from war, he said.

"What we have is a massive meat grinder. We put in young men and women at the top of the meat grinder," Davis said. "The military, the Department of Defense, all these good politicians who never go to war but think war is just wonderful are grinding that handle on that meat grinder. And out of the bottom of that meat grinder comes men and women who are slightly messed up, or are dead. It goes on year after year. We've now been in almost 15 years of wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. We are not learning. We lost in Vietnam, you can't fight ideas ... you can't shoot a bullet through an idea. Same thing in Afghanistan. Same thing in Iraq."  read more>>>

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Is of course the Republicans' insistence on numbers that allow their ideology/prejudices to prevail, in preference to those derived from observation, statistics, or science.

Cause Government by the people to be as disruptive as they can, thus causing extremely expensive fix's and more, and keep the meme's on how the private sector, for corate profit off the peoples treasury and as still government their ability to legislate added fee's and bigger funding budgets, that growing bottom line, while rarely talking about all the huge problems within the private sector that the corporate mentality cut costs and thus create!!

U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller: Veterans' Affairs issue an 'all too similar' scene
Jun 25, 2014 - Leaders of the U.S. House and Senate are hoping for a quick deal to fix the Department of Veteran's Affairs, although questions remain in dealing with the implications.

Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., delivered opening remarks at the U.S. Senate and House Veteran’s Affairs conference committee meeting June 24.

Rockefeller, former chairman of the committee, said in his remarks the situation with the Veterans’ Affairs is an all too similar scene.

“When I became chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee in 1993, I resolved that we would do all that we could to assist veterans who had been neglected or forgotten,” Rockefeller said in his statement. “After I heard from veterans suffering from undiagnosed illnesses related to their service in the Persian Gulf, I called for the committee to hold the first hearing on Gulf War Illness.

“It was a long fight, and one that is still ongoing,” Rockefeller added.

Rockefeller said veterans, at war time, were told their ailments were “all in their heads.”

He said every war has unanticipated health care costs and in every war – veterans must live on with those consequences.

“We will do no know what truly causes Gulf War Illness,” he said. “But we do know now that Gulf War Illness is a real disease and, because of the Persian Gulf War Veterans Benefits Act, veterans today are able to be treated for their undiagnosed illnesses.”   read more>>>

spot on and shhhhhh.. there is this guy in town today and local administrators did not want him in the loop..Trying to Shinskei him ...but it isn't working....  some advocates found out and there will probably be one or two posting on this last minute scheduled visit to Gainesville today...Some are going to respond that this is not in the best interest to privatize and they want whistleblower protection from the local bonus grabbers who want this in hands of the private sector.. If all goes as planned by some... names will be named at the state and local evels in these facilities..which can work great if secrets were not kept from the boss.

      Can't Wait!!!

      Knowing you'll be covering this!!

The Gen had a conservative target on him as soon as he spoke Military Truth and the bushco fired him!!

I'm starting to hound the White House in requesting he should get a High Honor Civilian Medal for All he did especially while trying to rebuild and handle the influx of the conservative free wars by also addressing the looooong ignored issues by the country as to the previous decades and wars from. Thanks to the help of this entire Executive Administration Cabinet!

He shouldn't have gone out as he did, though I'm still of mind it was his choice, and he should be remembered, not just by those now following and hopefully maintaining his direction for what should have always been!!

for Florida veterans and the whole debacle in Florida's house of cards.... Veteran employees at the bottom of the food chain , the ones who go out of their way to make the VA work, below the bought and paid for higher ups are standing up to why this is happening Who is really responsbile.... and why the FBI and DOJ need to take a look around of things being done locally behind the boss's back....besides secret wait lists.  He was lied to and IMO set up from get go but the more sunshine that comes in... the better chance for veterans to get the respect they deserve and no it was not Shinseki who betrayed them,.  It laid at the feet of some of these local levels.

they should start by "retiring" from office.

House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller said Republicans on a negotiating panel want to find savings to offset the costs of the measure,
Why waste $ on salaries for people who sit on their butts and won't do any real work?
