Hobby Lobby is a company which as a matter of policy mistreats its employees, just like Walmart.
Even if the Supreme Court says that they have the right to discriminate against women by denying coverage for birth control, it does not mean that they are doing the right thing.
Hobby Lobby is doing the egregiously wrong thing.
So, what does this mean we should do as activists?
How about:
Not shopping there.
- Supporting aggressive efforts to unionize the workforce (and BTW, once achieved, the union bargains for full medical coverage of healthcare).
- Opposing any sort of zoning or regulatory variances for the company. (actually an unlikely occurrence, as they are a denizen of strip malls)
- Complaining to media that carries their ads.
- Complain to your bank about offering them a line of credit, particularly if/when they start trying to selling franchizes.
As
other posters on Kos have noted, this company has held extensive holding in the manufacturers of contraception.
The evidence shows that this is not a moral decision on their part, it is a business decision. They chose to prosecute this suit because they figured that becoming a cause celebre for the "fear women's sexual power" branch of the right wing, they could achieve greater sales or profits. (I expect them to start offering franchises based on their right wing cred shortly)
If we can show that not only is their policy bad business, but it is horrifically bad business, we can keep this cancer from spreading through the workplace.
