Holy freaking hell.
The latest maudlin stunt against Obamacare is in the works. They're gonna
put on a show, everybody!
This is not just an elaborate video, this is a real event Gen Opp will actually host on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. [...] And then they will bring it on the road in 10 to 12 states.
This is just baffling. I mean sure, it's strange for the sake of strange, and the whole thing smells of headaches and chloroform, but if you run down the perceived "complaints" of the ad it bears no semblance to the reality of the thing they're complaining about, Obamacare, at all. They're not even trying, they're just throwing together words like "high risk pool" (in a non-Obamacare world, there's no high-risk pools? Really?) in nonsensical ways. Skyward-soaring premiums? Mandatory vasectomies? The target audience for this open crackpotism is who, exactly?
The continued Republican move into the realm of unapologetic un-reality, whether it be the announcement that they'll be suing Obama for reasons they haven't discerned yet, or the peddling of conspiracy theories ranging from sharia mop sinks to government ammo hoarding to birtherism, or the big-budget, party-wide assertions that Obamacare is doing all these things that it's clearly, on this planet and in this timeline, simply not doing, is all getting a bit ... Riefenstahlian.
Instinct says these increasingly melodramatic anti-Obamacare stunts will backfire—and I'm continually surprised that their consultants wouldn't be telling them that, but I suppose money is money. Generally speaking, you can't lie about things people have direct experience with and get away with it as easily as you might on anything else. You can lie about climate change because most people don't know climate science. You can lie about birth certificates because most people don't have the time or resources to personally prove you wrong. But if someone's getting better health insurance than they were before, and the rates aren't increasing as fast, and they're not being denied coverage for reasons that were getting their coverage denied before, you can't lie to them about that and expect anyone but the dumbest of rubes to believe it. When it comes to matters of the personal pocketbook, most people will know you're lying. And they'll freakin' resent you for it.
So, then: As you were, Generation Opportunity. Have fun with that. However much money you're spending to associate yourself with this (literal, cough) clown show, Republicans, it ain't enough.
