GOP Rep. Steve Stockman. He's the crazy one, right? Well ... not the only one.
You'd think that extremist Republican Congressman Steve Stockman would be doing a victory dance after House Speaker John Boehner
announced the details of his ridiculous pre-impeachment lawsuit against President Obama, but instead of celebrating, Stockman has moved
even further to the extreme:
Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) filed a resolution on Thursday directing the House sergeant at arms to find former IRS official Lois Lerner and arrest her on charges of contempt of Congress.
"Asking the Justice Department to prosecute Lois Lerner for admittedly illegal activity is a joke," Stockman said in a statement. "How much longer will the House allow itself to be mocked? It is up to this House to uphold the rule of law and hold accountable those who illegally targeted American citizens for simply having different ideas than the President."
As a reminder, Lerner has invoked her Fifth Amendment right to remain silent, but apparently Republicans in Congress don't recognize that particular part of the Bill of Rights because earlier this year they voted to hold her in contempt.
The issue here isn't whether invoking the Fifth means Lerner is hiding something, though it's perfectly understandable why she would invoke it even if innocent, because it turns out that as crazy as Stockman is, he isn't alone in demanding jail time:
Officials at the Internal Revenue Service responsible for targeting conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status should be imprisoned, House Speaker John A. Boehner said Wednesday.
"My question isn’t about who’s going to resign, my question is who’s going to jail over this scandal?" Boehner (R-Ohio) told reporters at a Wednesday morning news conference.
Moral of the story: Just when you thought Stockman was the crazy one ... along comes the paper trail to remind you that he's just one branch of a very, very, very big tree.
