My poem about subjects related to my childhood years this month, brings me to the third grade, and another go at the Shakespearean sonnet form. It's not altogether serious, though it has serious parts, and it's a little political, too, both obliquely, and a bit less so, in spots.
Enjoy my poetic "playing" and have a go at it yourselves, if so moved. ;^)
Kalliope
Means "beautiful voice" from Greek καλλος (kallos) "beauty" and οψ (ops) "voice". In Greek mythology she was a goddess of epic poetry and eloquence, one of the nine Muses.
Join us every Tuesday afternoon at the Daily Kos community political poetry club.
Your own poetry is always welcome in the comments.
Bongos, berets & turtle neck sweaters optional.
The keyboard is mightier than the sword.
Third Grade
What I remember about the third grade:
A happier time, much better teacher;
Instrument intro: flutophone, I played;
Brand-new best friend; so happy to meet her!
I tried to “adopt” some neighborhood “strays”
A dog, a cat, then an ailing wild bird–
Nursing it awhile occupied my days.
Escaped, found dead; its last distress unheard.
Election contest: Nixon-Kennedy
Though I didn’t completely understand–
Past dark times, democratic remedy.
More optimistic days were now at hand!
Summer swim lessons: my first “teacher” crush.
Handsome instructor, I liked very much!
