Everything about this story--from the video footage itself to the story about how the MDP acquired the footage--is a thing of beauty:

Republicans caught using spyglasses at Schauer campaign fundraiser

Detroit — For the third time this year, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer is accusing Republicans of attempting to spy on his campaign.

But this time, the suspected political subterfuge involves a high-tech hidden camera and a video memory disk that fell into the hands of Democrats.

And Republicans are defending their campaign snooping.

Schauer’s campaign and Oakland County Democrats recently came into possession of a tiny disk containing raw video footage of a young woman and man who secretly recorded a Schauer campaign fundraiser June 22 at a private home in Bloomfield Hills.

I'll post the video below, but you really have to read the whole story.

I actually have a connection to this incident; I wasn't at this particular fundraiser, but it took place in my hometown (Bloomfield Hills), and I did attend the prior fundraiser in Ferndale that they refer to in the video itself...where I had met (and presumably was recorded by) them.

I actually missed the OCDP meeting a couple of weeks later where the memory card was found, though.

Bonus: Our own Eclectablog, Chris Savage, is mentioned later in the story for his own busting of a rather slow-witted Snyder campaign intern who tried to infiltrate the Schauer campaign.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

All I am saying is using this decision time to put down HRC is stupid. Why not put down Sebelius or Murray or Pelosi?  Why don't we rip Sebelius, Murray and Pelosi to shreds while we are at it. I mean we want Warren to win don't we. /s

I wish HRC H8 was banned from the site like CT. In fact make that one better all Democrat H8.

Maybe they will come up with a strategy for this at NN. I'm hoping.

While I disagree with hatred of Secretary Clinton, issue criticism is entirely legitimate.

This place is about debate and discussion, among other things.  Who our nominee will be is important.

A cite that only praised all Dems would be boring and people would leave.

While I do tire of constant attacks on Democrats, including Obama and Clinton,  most are legitimate debate and belong here, even when I disagree.

The debates here will sharpen your skills are promoting Hillary Clinton, if you so desire.

Yes, the Warren boomlets can be silly sometimes since she endorsed Secretary Clinton,  but people got the right to do so here.

I also agree with pushing Democrats leftward.  The inequality we have today along with the ecological crises, demands that action.  While I have fought with people like Ray Pensador and others, and see Marxist/anarchist arguments misplaced, even they deserve a voice here.

Thinking back to Denise's controversial post -- she asked if you hate the place so much and don't like Dems, then why are you here?   She did not say, "you should be expelled from here."

Your position that arguing about Hillary now detracts from the election is a legitimate one, but not the only one.  It also is legitimate to debate regarding who will be and who should be the potential president in 2017.

Let 1000 flowers bloom, let 1000 schools of thought contend.

My hope is for an open primary contest, which I believe would come down to Warren vs. Clinton in the end.
I'll support Warren in that event, and hope for a clean contest, which I think is a good possibility given the people (candidates) involved.
Also, it would constitute history in the making, given that in such a contest, the first woman presidential candidate would be nominated. I don't think either woman would want to play a part in blowing it for the other.

Why does anyone have to use a secret camera at a campaign event?
Evidently the spirit of the Watergate spying scandal lives in the heart of many Republicans; they must have determined that because, for them, the means justifies the end, spying on the shady Democrats is acceptable.

It's just so damned - searching for a word? - how about 'juvenile,' as my pre-boomer peers used to say about childish behavior?

at the fundraiser, since it contains footage of them driving away from the fundraiser. (For some reason, the story refers to it as a "tiny disk", but I think it must be a memory card). From the story:

The disk containing the video was found on the floor of the Pipefitters Local 636 union hall in Farmington Hills after a July 8 Oakland County Democratic Party meeting, [Frank Houston, chairman of the Oakland County Democratic Party], said.
