Union Station (Washington, D.C.)Christopher Columbus Memorial Fountain, 22 May 2011.
It's been over a year since we've had a meetup with members from the Virginia, Maryland and DC area, and I think it's time to have another. The two meetups we had at Union Station in DC in 2012 and 2013 had good turnouts and great discussions, so I'm scheduling another one for later this month, August 23rd.

Details:

August 23rd, from 12:30 - 4:40 pm.
Union Station, DC
Food court. For our first Union Station meetup, JTinDC scouted out the area for us and identified a great location that has plenty of tables and doesn't get too crowded. It's roughly at the halfway point between each end of the food court, underneath the "up" escalator on the opposite side of the foot court from Flamers, and near the Aditi Indian Kitchen.

Since everyone likes to eat something different, we'll meet at the food court. We can pull tables together and move around to talk with each other. This is something I liked at last get together, we did a lot of switching around, which is better than being locked in to talk to the same person all afternoon, it's nice to be able to talk with more people.

This way, everyone can buy the food they want to buy, eat earlier or a little later. If you're on a tight budget or special diet, you can even bring your own meal.

The one drawback to the food court is that none of the places sell liquor, so if you want it, you'll have to discreetly bring your own (as one of our members did last time).

I am really looking forward to seeing the wonderful people that came to the MD/VA/DC meetup and hopefully meeting some new Kossacks.

If you can come, please respond in the comments. Also, if you have preferences about the times and the restaurants, talk about that in the comments.

One thing I'd like to ask is that if you think you might be coming, check your Kosmail so that we can exchange contact information.

Sat Aug 02, 2014 at 7:09 AM PT: I'm going to the Star Trek convention in Maryland this afternoon and won't be back till Monday, so I probably won't be commenting for a few days.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

If I can unravel the mysteries of the new Silver Line, I could take it to Union Station. Will have to do some investigating, though--haven't taken the Metro in years!

Thanks for planning the event, JamieG!

For anyone coming any distance, a 4:40 PM start (which means people will be trickling in until 5:30) effectively books the whole day for anyone coming from outside the DC Metro area. E.g., if I come down from uptown Baltimore on the MARC train & plan to stay for more than a cup of coffee with the early arrivals, I can't get back until 8:50 PM, which by the time I get home pretty much shoots the evening. A start scheduled for 3 PM or 6 PM would have taken up the afternoon or evening but not both.

If I can find something else I'd like to do in the DC area before or after, I might drop by. I guess that makes me a very iffy maybe.

Been on the C!U!A! daily diaries for a couple of weeks now.

These events need to be combined. If that's not possible, I suggest that one of them be rescheduled.

Advertise every third or fourth DC monthly meetup as a "plenary session" for the VA/MD/DC region. If the DC folks don't mind.

This would leave the Maryland group free to schedule smaller more focused sessions in Baltimore or Annapolis or Columbia or wherever.

        What do you think?

        •  Hi Uncle Cosmos. (0+ / 0-)

DC Kossacks is a gathering of Kossacks who live/work in or somehow identify with DC (though anyone local or visiting is welcome).  The group has a DC-centric focus although we certainly envision helping out in MD/VA to GOTV as needed. We meet the third Saturday of every month as we have since April 2014.  And yes, we plan to meet-up August 16th at noon.  We meet monthly because that frequency really lets us get to know one another and build meaningful community with our literal neighbors. Our next meet-up is August 16 at noon near the Smithsonian Metro. Interested Kossacks can contact me, NinthElegy, to join DC Kossacks and to get more details about our meet-ups.

I plan to attend the August 23rd meet-up as well because it's a very different sort of meet up. DC Kossacks has thus far, only met outdoors for picnics.  It is a meet-up where ambient noise is a non-issue such that conversations can easily be had in a small group environment and it is a relaxed and meandering affair.  That is attractive for many reasons. The MD/VA/DC meet-up at Union Station is good in a different way. It draws many more Kossacks from the entire metro region and allows the opportunity to meet folks from MD/VA/DC.  I find that I never get to meet everyone at these larger gatherings! I do find them valuable and know I'm going to be looking to identify local candidates in MD/VA who may need help in the run up to November.

navajo's long-term vision is to have groups in every district across the country.  Given that, my perspective is schedule the meet-ups. Attend those you can attend. Each will have something of value to offer. I cannot see any negatives that come from meeting-up and doing so regularly. Even more groups and meet ups are coming.

Meanwhile and that said, making a plenary area meet-up every quarter is fine with me.  I gather that's what the regional salons navajo has spoken of will accomplish as well. Hopefully others will chime in.

          •  If you "cannot see any negatives," it may be (0+ / 0-)

because you're not one of those being asked to make a 90-mile 2-hour round trip to meet with your "local" colleagues. MARC trains are $7 each way; gasoline from here runs about the same--not a fortune but not inconsiderable either if you're on a fixed income.

I would prefer your picnic arrangements to Union Station (weather permitting) if that didn't add significant time, distance & difficulty for us'ns in the boonies. Food courts tend to be crowded & noisy & I have never thought very much of the one at US, but it's about the least inconvenient venue in DC available for people coming from beyond the steel tentacles of the Metro.

I'm glad you see some value in quarterly plenary sessions; maybe that can work out.

            •  kosmail me which location (0+ / 0-)

would be convenient for you in MD. I am trying to figure out, who of the MD kossacks would like to have a smaller MD meet-up centered around MD campaign issues and where they would like to meet. So far I have seen Dadadata and Aximill suggesting a smaller MD meet-up that would be more focused on MD campaigns. But you still need to say, which city it should be in, if it's not the DC Union Meet-up on Aug. 23rd. Is it Baltimore, Annapolis or what would be the location, those folks would likely come to. Can you help among yourself to figure it out?

I go to wherever something is announced, but would be  interested in a smaller subject focussed meet-up just for MD campaigns and other clearly MD related issues right now, triggered through diaries I read.

            •  Sorry Unc, just seeing this reply. (0+ / 0-)

Listen, I totally understand and don't mean to have sounded insensitive to your concerns. I very much relate to them.

What you are describing sounds, to me, to be an indication that your area needs to start the newest CUA! chapter. MD Kos and VA Kos for that matter cannot cover their entire states. As you state, it's unfair for people who live some distance away from wherever the meet-up is slated to occur. Plus, the issues and candidate races in your neck of the woods will be different from folks in Southern MD or the Eastern Shore. Why not have your own Kos group. I have found my life enriched by connecting with Kossack neighbors who live close by. I reckon Kossacks out your way might find the same value in connecting.

Now that said, I hope to see you on the 23rd, far-flung neighbor of mine that you are. And of course you are welcome to join us on the lawn for one of our DC Kossacks picnics any third Saturday.  I suppose we'll need to find an alternative when the weather changes but we'll cross that bridge...
