A verdict has been reached in the Renisha McBride murder trial.
Guilty of murder in the 2nd degree.
Guilty on manslaughter.
Guilty of felony firearms charges.
Theodore Wafer has been found guilty on all three charges.
Her life mattered
Gooserock suggested I add a bit of background for those who are not familiar with the case:
In the early morning hours of November 2, 2013, 19 year old Renisha McBride crashed her car on the west side of Detroit. Disoriented and confused, either from intoxication or a head injury or both, she wandered the neighborhood and walked about a mile away from the accident until she decided to knock on a door and ask for help in a nearby suburb.
Apparently her knocking at Theodore Wafer's door was loud and insistent. He opened his door and shot her in the face and she died.
When initially questioned he claimed his gun just went off. Then he changed his story to say he was afraid for his life thinking someone was trying to break into his house.
Wafer had other options for dealing with the situation.
He could have called the police, but he said he could not find his cel phone and does not have a land line.
But it was easier for him to find his gun.
He could have stayed behind locked doors and waited for the supposed intruder to actually break in before shooting, instead of (wrongfully) assuming it was a break in.
He could have shouted through the door "who are you/what is wrong with you/what do you want" etc.
Instead he became the latest in a long line who shot first and asked questions later.
For once he did not get away with it.
