A Brief History of the Apocalypse

Floaters been promotin' "YOUR moral decay is going to get ME into heaven" for a helluva long time. According to Isaac Asimov's Book of Facts the first predicted Apocalypse was in ca. 2800 BC. Even if you discount that for some reason, the next was in 634 BC.

Depending on how you define the Apocalypse, the end of HUMANS or the end of the WORLD, the real apocalypse comes in ca. 4,500,000,000 AD when the sun will swell into a red giant star, swallowing Mercury, Venus, Earth, and perhaps Mars. This will be the true end of the world!

Personally and IMNSHO, the way we burn shit to save time and effort, not to mention get around and generate electricity, is going to end the human race LONG before then. Maybe in this century. We're probably already past the tipping point...

Consider this my public apology to my grand-kids/great grand-kids that I didn't do more, and earlier, to battle the anthropogenic global climate change deniers. Starting with the Bible-thumpers, then moving on to Big Oil funded quasi-"scientist" and (you have to have seen this coming) Republicans and ESPECIALLY teabaggers...a "vast conspiracy" of scummy people determined to make the world a better worse place.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:

  •  Personally, I'd vote (10+ / 0-)

Teabaggers as the most dangerous imminent threat, global climate change as the biggest long-term threat. But "war like mentality" is a scary turn of events for America, and the world, and religious fundamentalists CAN'T be reasoned with.

So we're kinda going to have a hard time if we want our kids and grandkids to have a world we're "proud" to leave to them.

Honestly, I don't know how to vote in MY OWN poll...

"floaters" is a reference to those who believe they're going to float on into heaven during "The Rapture", while the rest of us suffer.

I find them to be particularly judgmental holier than thou pricks.

we can't have a serious, pertinent and factually informed discussion about anything, not one that reaches and includes the mainstream at any scale bigger than a village.

We can't because anything that would lead to an informed electorate requires full frontal violations of speech and press freedom.

Hell of a system we have here.

that ends up costing the company a few bucks (in my biz, it's part of life), and then I feel really bad about it, I always feel better when I remind myself this:  One day the earth is to be incinerated by our dying sun, and when that happens do you think anyone is going to give a shit that I cost the company a couple hundred dollars?

    Perspective.

results in a long, rambling, end-of-times rant that has zero chance of coming true.

I apologize to no one's kids or grand kids. I didn't do it.

In years of coffee shop conversations I have proved that no one ever changes his mind about climate or ecology or economics unless forced by threats of impoverishment.
And then only temporarily until their situation improves.

My generation split into two factions.  One favored civil rights and was against the war in Vietnam.  The other took the other sides of the argument.

Those on one side prospered and became this generation of leaders, the other did not.  So we still have to fight for various civil rights for different minorities and we still argue (to no positive effect) about making war.

Remember: no safety or pollution regulation, no wage and hour laws, nothing happens until somebody dies.

you have to get at oligarchy. To get at oligarchy, you have get at Third Way. To get at Third Way, you have to end appeasement. To end appeasement, appeasers must open their eyes and join those fighting to end the appeasement and dismantle the defenses and temples of the oligarchs. (After all, its the oligarchs who are committed to denial and intransigence.) Only hen we can redirect the full complement of necessary resources of this nation to serious mitigation of Climate Change, which will ultimately include corralling the rest of the world into the effort as well.
