From the New York Times:
A federal judge in North Carolina on Friday rejected an effort by civil rights groups and the Justice Department to block the application of key elements of a Republican-backed state law that curtailed early voting and other opportunities for residents to cast their ballots [....] including the seven-day reduction of the state’s early-voting period; the elimination of a program that allowed for registration and voting on the same day during early voting; a ban on counting provisional ballots when voters cast them out of their home precinct; and a program that allowed 16- and 17-year-olds to “preregister” in anticipation of coming elections.
Sock-puppet Republican governor Pat McCrory, his Koch-lite paymaster Art Pope, NC House Speaker Thom Tillis (currently the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate seat held by Kay Hagan), plus a recently gerrymandered Republican super-majority in the NC state legislature pushed through these voter suppression initiatives to artificially tilt purple North Carolina back into the red zone in coming elections. While that drive is hardly the only complaint NC Democrats, liberals, progressives, and other not-crazy people have against Tillis and his fellow hijackers, nonetheless it has provided a strong and ongoing impetus for North Carolina's Moral Mondays movement.
The battle continues.
