A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Good morning Kogs and Kossacks in Dailykosland!
Let's start the working week with a Moral Monday.
Are there any tourist attractions near you?
Have you visited them or do you avoid them?
The three cities I have lived in the longest are all full of tourist attractions.
During the 17 years I lived in DC I went to the Smithsonian frequently and my mom loved to take me to the National Zoo. Once a family member with connections arranged for a special White House Tour, but it was during Nixon's presidency and I (putting it mildly) didn't care for Nixon so I wasn't as excited as I might have been. I went to the Capitol on a school trip and sat in the visitors' gallery of the House of Representatives for a few minutes, and right before I went away to college I did get to the top of the Washington Monument. But I have never been to the Lincoln Memorial, or the Jefferson, or Arlington National Cemetery (just outside DC), or the Bureau of Engraving, or any of the major DC museums. When I was growing up there, those things were just part of the background scenery. I did go to the Air and Space museum the week it opened to celebrate the bicentennial, but have never been to the Holocaust museum—it opened after I moved away.
I barely had time to visit NYC sights because I only lived there briefly between junior and senior year of college. I only saw the Empire State Building from a distance, and ditto for the Statue of Liberty. I never took the Circle Line boat ride. Times Square was not the tourist attraction then that it is now. I did go to the World Trade Center but not as a tourist—I worked for a while in a bookstore on the lower level near the PATH train entrance. But one day while on a lunch break I did take the elevator up to the 110th floor to the Top of the World Observation Deck just so I could say I had been there. I didn't stay long. The weather wasn't clear enough for the really spectacular view.
When it comes to Boston, I've lived here more than twice as long as I lived in DC. I've been here since the Charles River and Boston Harbor were dirty! When friends and family were in town I could not bring myself to get excited about doing touristy things with them. Once my cousin visited and wanted to see the Bull and Finch Pub (the exterior of it was used for the opening to "Cheers") but I said "It doesn't look like it on the inside" (she went in without me and came out after a few minutes saying "it doesn't look like it on the inside"). I have been to the Aquarium once, and I've been on the swan boats once. I've thrown tea in the harbor at the Tea Party Museum. I walked part of the Black Heritage Trail and saw the Massachusetts 54th monument and the African Meeting House.
When I read all that it looks like I've done a lot, but I haven't walked the Freedom Trail, or been on a duck boat ride, or any of the other double decker bus tours. I've been to the MFA but there are a LOT of other museums I've never seen. People come here from all over the world to see things I could go to every weekend. I feel weird about it, as if the tourists who come here for a week have seen more of the city than I have seen in 39 years.
Do you live in an area with historic, cultural, or amusement attractions? Do you take friends and family to see them when they are in town? Have you ever been to any of them for your own amusement, without the excuse of an out of town guest? Or would you not be caught dead anywhere near them?

More Than 40 Kossacks Get High in Phoenix
by Mother Mags ♥ for Phoenix Kossacks and Baja Arizona Kossacks
Kossacks attended the meet-up from around the state, helped out by strong recruitment from Azazello and other Baja Arizona friends south of the Gila River.
[...] A week before the meet-up fewer than 20 people had registered, and we anticipated a big table where we could discuss specific races and issues in our communities. Then something happened, and the RSVPs more than doubled in a week. Thanks, Markos, for the recruitment tool!
navajo: "I had a great time attending this meet-up. I chatted with almost everyone individually and then spoke to the whole group about what Daily Kos can do for them in terms of organizing and helping their ranks grow. Not one person wanted to rehash the online dispute. Everyone wanted to move forward. What a great group! The evening was extremely enjoyable and I look forward to working with Arizona Kossacks on ACTION items in their state going forward."

Uniting Kansas: Recap of Meetup, Hutchinson (Video)
by tmservo433 ♥ for Kansas & Missouri Kossacks
tmservo433 organized a successful event featuring 3 candidates and a AFL-CIO endorsement.
Despite 100+ degree temperature, and a normal size crowd (about 50/60) the event in Hutchinson quickly went viral, with a few thousand watching the streams online, thanks to agressive sharing, emailing and people encouraging others to spread the live stream of the video.
Please visit

Democrats Unite in Emporia
by tmservo433 ♥ for Kansas & Missouri Kossacks
So our latest hero, tmservo433 provides a great re-cap to the event we promoted here for him.
At the time Paul Davis spoke, I had an in room headcount of 166, which is a heck of a turnout. Sam Brownback couldn't bring in 200 in the Kansas City Metro when Rick Santorum came to town.
Kossacks showed up. Several Kossacks were in the hall, as well as individuals who noticed I still had on my Netroots gear, and were happy to come and tell us how they are working for change in our communities.
tmservo433 is doing great work seeking out Kossacks and moving his state's progressive agenda forward.
Please visit tmservo433's diary for more photos! Enjoy! You can still REC it. You can join Kansas & Missouri Kossacks by sending a Kosmail to tmservo433.
Event Organizers! Please contact wink from Netrootsradio.com by KosMail to schedule airtime with them to live broadcast the date of your Event. Wink & Justice will then promote it on The After Show radio program!
