This will be the third year we've had a meetup at Union Station DC -- even though last year it was in June, the year before in October -- I guess I'll start calling it our annual meetup.

After I sent out a message about the meetup to someone in Virginia Kos, she sent back the question, "What's the purpose?" It's really a great question and I wish that someone more articulate like Navajo would answer it, but I gave it a try, and I'll share my answer with you:

I have found the meetups are motivating. I'm surrounded by a lot of republicans in my community, so it helps to spend some time with other Democrats.

I've made friends through these meetups, sometimes only facebook connections, but it has helped to spread the word about issues we're interested in. I've also seen some of the Marylanders getting more involved in voter registration and Virginia elections.

I anticipate 20+ people attending from Maryland, DC, and Virginia. There is a nice area that is generally not too crowded; the last two times we managed to have the whole area to ourselves. We bring the tables in a long row, but people tend to move around so they can talk to different people.

Last year Mimi did a great diary after our Union Station meetup. Here's a link to it:

And here's links to two of mine:

I hope you can come. If you think you can, let me know either in the comments or a kosmail, and check your kosmails so we can exchange contact information.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.
Rescue this diary, and add a note:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from Rescue?
Choose where to republish this diary. The diary will be added to the queue for that group. Publish it from the queue to make it appear.

You must be a member of a group to use this feature.

Add a quick update to your diary without changing the diary itself:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary?
(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
(The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?

this question. And having been to two of the meet-ups before and to the new DC Kos with NinthElegy for me the question is important to answer.

For me it seems there are two sides to the meet-ups.

One is to get to know your fellow kossack neighbors and socialize with them. This is not as easy as it seems, because the people can be very diverse, come from very different walks of life, have wide ranges of opinions, knowledge and experiences. In a cordial and friendly social event like these meet-ups are, everyone tries to be as nice to each other as possible, the diversity either might not come out during the socializing conversations or if it might make some people to feel too alien in the group.

My hope would be for those who feel like that, to overcome that feeling. It would help a lot to have "leading kossacks" in the meet-up. People who have written a lot in the past and have clear ideas of what to do for a certain causes and discuss them. That is really just my personal opinion and I hope I do not offend anyone with that.

I kind of like to have a purpose for a meet-up. To talk about potential efforts in organizing a GOTV, getting to learn about support for workers in the restaurant and hotel industry, or participating in a demonstration of a subject of kossack's many interests.

For example, I for one hope that I will meet and find out this time, what really can be done to influence the elections for the City Council in Anne Arundel County. Three diaries by people, who are not local to the Anne Arundel County 5th district, have written about the candidate Michael Peroutka and the need to support his democratic opponent. So, I like to know if there is anybody who has any idea about what to do.

I am foreigner and can't vote, but this example is one that goes under my skin. It's also an example that scares me.

So, for me personally, this time the purpose of the meet-up is to find out what others think about that case.

Other kossacks might have other issues that they itch to discuss and organize a response to.

Let's try it and please come and join.
