There are a thousand things wrong with today's society. Although most of those things have been wrong for awhile, many of them have been getting worse for some time.
Unemployment, the diminishing minimum wage, income inequality in general, the damage to our enviornment. It is a very long list of serious issues which would be significant by themselves, but are terrible taken as a whole.
And whenever these issues are brought up, the other side has one stock response which seems to cut off the conversation every time. They say that we are engaging in class warfare.
It's about time that we gave that statement the proper response.
That response should be, "We are finally defending ourselves. For decades the programs we rely on have been cut, while the rich had their taxes reduced. The middle class has been attacked on all sides, and we aren't going to take it anymore."
It doesn't matter whether that response is treated with contempt or not. Somebody needs to say it, again and again.
Unfortunately, the Democratic party has become very much a part of Wall Street. The fact that Republicans have gone insane makes it very easy for them. All a Democrat really has to do is vote gay mairraige and promise not to start World War III, and he can then say, "Hey, at least I'm better than the other guy." At this point, he will almost always be better than the Republican, even if he votes with them half the time.
The class warfare argument is effective not so much because everyone is really afraid of how it will poll, but because the Democrat involved knows he is going to be looking for campaign financing soon. Since the middle class is broke, he is going to need to speak with people who do care about the class warfare statement.
These days, I think the only chance that the middle class has is if someone who isn't a politician can get speaking time on our media. Nobody who runs for office can afford to take up the fight.
