This month, I'm up to my fourth grade year, which was a pretty good one, though my family had moved again and I was in another new school. But, I'll leave anything more for the poem, below the orange squiggly dingbat.

Means "beautiful voice" from Greek καλλος (kallos) "beauty" and οψ (ops) "voice". In Greek mythology she was a goddess of epic poetry and eloquence, one of the nine Muses.

Join us every Tuesday afternoon at the Daily Kos community political poetry club.

Your own poetry is always welcome in the comments.

Bongos, berets & turtle neck sweaters optional.

The keyboard is mightier than the sword.

Fourth Grade Memory

What I remember most
Of my fourth grade teacher
Was her encouragement
Of my artistic yearnings.

We were given an assignment
To draw freehand (not traced!)
A witch on her broomstick
Posted on the wall for Halloween.

She liked the one I did so much
That she encouraged classmates
To bring in moss for witch hair,
Pine needles for the broom bristles;

It became something of a class
Project, like a collage, as I recall.
I don't know if I can ever remember
Another time when a teacher

Liked something artistic
That I'd done as well as my
Fourth grade teacher liked
My freehand Halloween witch!

Tagging tips - Search For Tags - Browse For Tags

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

    I am wishing for you
    comfort for your fears,
    loud, deep, releasing cries
as you bury the dark skinned
beloved ones too soon taken away

my hearts arms reach for you
    wishing to hold your heart
till it stops bleeding too much
    to survive, then lend you
    strength and courage

to again rise up and keep on,
    over and over and over,
    holding each others hands
eyes wide open, heads held high
    again, again, and again

When all the trees have been cut down, when all the animals have been hunted, when all the waters are polluted, when all the air is unsafe to breathe, only then will you discover you cannot eat money. Cree Prophecy

Thank you, scribe, for this poem. It's heartfelt, and highly appropriate to what is going on in too many places, both in this country, and the world at large. Would that it were easier for all people to find in themselves and act in humane compassion, and harder to do so in judgmental abuse and death-dealing!

Guess nobody has that much time for poetry right now. I do appreciate the recommendations in the tip jar, and thank you for taking the time to read my humble poetic offerings.

Hope things somehow turn around politically in this country. The  ugliness, it burns.

Seems like everyone I know is down in the dumps right now, so thanks for recording a pleasant memory.
